About a year ago I bought an 8V92TA online, it looked good so I brought it home! I took this engine to a certified DD dealer for a complete check and rebuild. The first problem was the block, my certified dealer wouldn't rebuild this engine there were two reason it had the old style block and heads. My DD guy said his company would not build an engine they couldn't guarantee. Most 8V92TA cores run anywhere from 3500 to 4500 depending on where you buy it!

This DD guy has been in business since 1922, and honestly I think this guy is great, honesty pays! Evidently the old style blocks have a set of three cooling passages between each cylinder the old style block has smaller cooling passess than the newer style block, this area was a problem with cylinder cracking from detonation and heat build up!

When buying a DD 8V92 check the model and serial number, there is an equipment tag on the valve cover that has all of this information, if the tag isn't there, "don't buy it"! If the tag is there take those numbers to a DD Certified dealer and find out which block you have, save yourself some money and a headache!

A friend who works for Penske Jasper saved my butt on this, I was very fortunate between the DD guy and my buddy!

I posted this information hoping to pass on the information that someone here might use in the future.

Pat,

You have hit on valuable info here, however don't just go by the info on the valve covers(to easily changed to be trusted). Be positive by getting the #'s off the block !! BK

Bryce, I have another little tid bit of information. When DD was about to go under, Roger Penske stepped in and saved that from happening. It seems that between the 8v92 and the 8.2 liter engines DD was in trouble, both engines were big problems from what I heard! Anyway Penske saved DD from disaster, part of the compensation packages to Penske was the copywrites to DD engines, funny thing here he didn't want the copywrites to the 8v92 or the 8.2 liter engine, that sends a message! That said I'm still putting the new one in, see bus nuts really are nuts!

How can I get the number of the engine they started to put the new stuff in? I have an 8V92 and have no idea if it is the old type or the newer.
