Couldn't figure out why the charging system wasn't working pulled the Alt, had it tested and it was good. Did some more digging around and found the ring gear that drives the Alt was "freewheeling" . I pulled the adapter and gear drive, the drive gear is spinning on the shaft, so I need the shaft and gear

Billy,does yours have the bakelite drive disk? If it does it could have sheared or shredded.Check for a shreared keyway also.

For those of you that have had this happen, NEVER,EVER, re-use the gear or shaft, use new or good used parts that have not "slipped" . If the key breaks throw the shaft and gear away. Once the shaft and gear have turned on each other they are junk. There are very close tolerances on these parts. The danger is locking up the gear drive on that end of the engine block and then you have a busted up pile of metal parts.
