A sad sight this weekend reminded me how important it is to use our flashers when creeping up a grade. Shortly after sunset we came across a class A motorhome with a trailer full of sand toys impaled in the back of a big rig on the I-10 grade coming into Palm Springs. Must have been a huge speed differential, as the first 6 feet of the MH were completely obliterated. Just gone. It looked like no hope for driver and any front seat passenger, and questionable for anyone else in the MH. For all I know the truck driver had his flashers on the MH driver just wasn’t paying attention. But it was just another reminder that NOBODY is paying attention while driving anymore (other than the pros). Around here, cars routinely travel 20mph over the limit, so this exacerbates the problem faced by a bus that slows below 50 on a grade. The more we do to make ourselves visible when moving slowly, the better. Use those flashers and consider adding more!

I don't if anyone has notice but I have seen chapter and verse for the low of min speed and what to do if you can't maintain that speed. I have never run the west coast but I driven almost everything and flashers in most states are a law.

its a law in CA I'm 97% positive. Im pretty sure its if you're going 25mph below the speed limit. its also a law to use tunouts too.

Kyle,

I'd love to know what section of the CVC contains that law.

AFAIK, it's never legal to use flashers in California on a moving vehicle, unless "an extreme hazard" exists (or the vehicle is an "Authorized Emergency Vehicle"). "Extreme Hazard" is defined elsewhere in the code, and does not include slow-moving vehicles on multi-lane highways.

Of course, it's been three or four years since I had to know my way around the CVC -- things may have changed since then.

BTW, the law regarding turnouts, which applies to roads with only one lane in your direction, applies regardless of speed. The law stipulates that you must turn out if there are five or more vehicles behind you. You need to turn out, even if you are doing the limit. OTOH, if there is only one vehicle behind you, you are not required to turn out no matter how slowly you are traveling.

FWIW.

Wonder if that trailer had working brakes? Properly operating trailer brakes can make a significant difference in stopping distance. Will make some difference in all cases, but less significant on light trailer / heavy tractor combinations.

I don't think it has anything to do with your opinion of the law,if you don't want to die & you don't want to kill somebody, you need to use flashers when you are going slower than traffic & you need to be in the right hand lane,
