Has any one figured how much money in fuel saved by not carring all that weight of a spare tire. I have been bussen for over 25 years and never carried a spare. I bet I'm way ahead of the game money wise. Have had 2 flats, that I can remember, both were on the duals and not far from a truck stop |

Guess it depends where you cruise. In the woods of Canada it will be a day or so before a service truck can get to you , IF you can figure a way to call them! A 200lb tire in a 25,000 lb bus is a pretty small percentage . Easier to travel with emptier tanks , if weight is a concern , or to drive more frugaly . FAST FRED |

I made a comment on my bus spare tire plan on the other page #1 on this thread if you miss it being here. How come there is two threads of this?? Anyhow, a spare for me for sure, the weight also will help prevent Porposing, (spelling) of an Eagle anyhow I am told. If I have a spare undercarriage why wouldn't I want a spare tire. Oh, welcome back Fast Fred, glad to see you. Gary |

Gary, the spare tire will not stop porposing in an Eagle. I know. I tried it both ways. It was worse with the spare BTW. What did completely stop the porpoising was replacement of all the shocks with Gabriel adjustable air shocks. I no longer have the number, but the good guys at Southern Oregon Diesel turned me on to them. The new shocks absolutely positively 100% stopped the very serious porpoising problem that I had. Thanks for the information on the shocks Richard, I have received from Jefferson all brand new shocks to be installed when ready but not sure what brand they are. They sent me special one's for the front, intersting to check out, could be the special one's you talk about and will look today. any how the spare is my way to go again, I plan to teach wife how to change tires just in case. (Yea, right)!! Gary |

I have been told that the original Eagle shocks were not really stiff enough to remove all the porpoising, depending on the transition in the road you were crossing. Before installing the new ones from Jefferson, I would strongly suggest you talk to Dave at SOD. Richard |

I keep a spare. always. why? 'cause I'm paranoid like that. I'm only 21, don't make bunches of $$, still rent a home, don't own, and can't afford to be spending money I don't have to. sure, itd be nice to have some guy come out at midnight and do it for me, but its worth it to me to just do it myself. I carry 2 jacks, 4 blocks, and when I got new tires put on I had the nice guy @ les schwab walk me through the process step by step. that helped loads. so for my own peace of mind, I carry a brand new Ohtsu 11Rx24.5 tire on a steel rim right under my butt while I drive. kyle in norcal 1980 Eagle 10 #30223 |

One thing everybody that carries a jack and blocks should check and that is if you have a flat on a front tire, can you get a jack and block under the axle with the tire flat. I found to my dismay that the jack I carried in my 4104 would not go under the axle when the tire was flat. I never carried a spare or jacks in my Eagle and never experienced a flat tire in well over 100,000 miles. Richard |

Richard, I checked my new shocks from Jefferson today, they are Gabriel and the front ones definately labeled to be used on front only. Not sure now if they are as good as the ones you got, mine are not adjustable but gott give them a try. I'll be so nervous driving after 4-6 years I will not know if I am porpoising or flying but will get the drift of my ride over time. If I need to change shocks then I will in the front. No biggie after all I have been through. Thanks again for the information and I will try to keep in mind but still glad I was sent special shocks from Jefferson just for the front. What to heck does BTW mean??? I just figures out what AkA stands for. I am a butt wipe at trying to remember all this computer lanuguage instead of typing the words, but I am learning. Gotta be the Yankee / French in me. Gary |

"I found to my dismay that the jack I carried in my 4104 would not go under the axle when the tire was flat. " In the 4106 book a "run up block" is shown. Its about the width of a tire and made from 4 inch stock , about 18 inches long, tapered on one end. The drill is to drive the coach foward till its on the block , allowing enough room for a cheap jack. Nice if the spot Da Book recomends as a jack point is painted white. That way it can be found at night , or pointed out to the tire guy that has never even ridden in a bus. Works for me, FAST FRED |

I recently purchase a 1979 MC-9 MCI 47 pass. Bus. It has a 8v71 Detroit engine with 4 speed auto tranny. I am looking to convert to an RV. Would you know how I could purchase a Mainet. Manual 1979 for my Mc-9 bus? |

Welcome back FF.... Was getting pretty lonesome out here. Not too many of the "older" group around, it seems. Trust you had a successful (and good) summer trip. RCB (R>C>Bishop) |

Fast Fred is 100% right. When I had a flat on the way home from original purchase thats exactly what I did. Also makes it easy to start the jack, just pull blocks out after tire is lifted up above them. |

Good information FF. I really do not think many of you nuts really appreciate the information that you get for free on the boards. Back in the 70's (when I had my 4104) there was absolutely no where to go for valuable information like this. Richard |
