I did a video of a trip the band made in the 4104.

Although it would be concidered a short trip to many of you (550 miles round trip) it was the longest trip we have made in it since we got the bus 8 weeks ago.

Enjoy...

Austin, Great video. I noticed the Casey Jones sign, as in Jackson, TN? My folks live in Pinson. Really enjoyed the music. Hope you enjoy the bus. Frank

Hey - AWESOME music! I especially loved the last one.....my husband and I are working musicians - can't wait until we're on the road full time with the bus. A dream of mine - find other bussin' musicians so we can put a full band together for festivals, etc. We're bass & drums.......music is original Western Swing. Dori & Dave Evans

Thanks for all the great replies...

The band plays clubs mostly around the Memphis TN area. We have played the Rock-a-Billy thing in Jackson TN and the Johnny Cash thing in Dyes AR. We also play a few clubs in Oxford MS for the college crowd.

I'm just the sound man (never learned to play an instrument) and I drive the bus most of the time.

You can see/hear more of the band at eddielsmith.com and see a few photos of our gigs.
There are a few more videos on YouTube also just search for Zimtok, my online handle.

Austin -

Say, maybe you can answer a question for me:

Why is it, at many of the "big name" concerts, that the sound mix is such that you often cannot hear the vocals over the band?

Went to Tim McGraw / Faith Hill when they were in town a few weeks ago, and the only time you could acutally hear them sing was when they did their acoustic set.

That concert was SO LOUD that my ears rang for nearly two days afterwards. . . wish I'd had a decible meter with me, my guess is that it was over the pain threshold.

Any idea why they mix the sound that way?

Everyone that mixes sound has their own idea of what sounds good.

But if they were recording using the same mix as FOH (front of house) then it can sound bad.

Also if they used a "house mix" and didn't bring their own equipment and people to run it then the "in house soundman" will not be used to the performers. Many "in house sound" is just set and then left alone the whole night.

Another common problem is that when the sound check is done the musicians may not have their amps at the volume they truly play at. then the instruments end up being too loud, even if they turn them off in the FOH the level coming off the stage can be louder then the vocals. (especially in a small venue)

Sound checks are done in an empty venue and EQ'd without benefit of a crowd and unfortunately done mainly to control feedback - once the crowd shows up certain frequencies are consumed by the human 'mass', especially those in the vocal Hz bandwidth - An experienced soundperson takes this into allowance and provides for a vocal check after the venue is full but prior to the performance - the difference between a pleasureful or a disappointing performance is more likely the result of improper sound attenuation/reinforcement than the abilities/disabilities of the performance artist or their gear - A good soundperson is worth their weight in gold and prior knowledge of venue acoustics is certainly beneficial - HTH

one of the absolute worst sounding shows i have ever heard was the band "chicago". the opening act sounded great, but after 30 minutes of the headline act, we actually left it was so bad.

i did sound for a long time, and i know horns are a bit problematic, but this was incredibly bad. :/

liked your video :-) i like your sound. :-)

the highway scenes made me smile (the shakedown for my bus was from the seattle area to lukes and back, in my 56 scenicruiser...)

now i wanna go work on the bus :-)

Watching the video I saw that a PD4104 actually passed a semi truck. Enjoy the ride.
