I don't know if some of you are aware of it, but I am now in the almost 5th month of a one year trip with my family across the USA. At first my kids were excited, but still a little nervous about living in a bus for a year. Going from a 3000 sq. foot home to a 320 sq. foot bus is a big shift, especially to 4 kids under 13.

However, I'm pleased to say that they refer to it as "home." We are loving life on the road in our bus. It truly is home. We are together and enjoying each other. As a dad, I'm thrilled. We are getting to show our kids the beauty of God's creation across the US and I'm spending every day with my wife and kids...how fortunate am I?!!!? Thank you Lord...

Tomorrow we're visiting Crater Lake here in Oregon, then off to see the big ol' Redwoods on the California coast.

Hope you all are having as much fun with your bus and your family as I am. Enjoy!!!

Sounds like a great time. Are you home schooling your kids? How's that going? How was leaving their friends behind?

Yes, we are home schooling the kids and it's going great. It takes our kids about 3 1/2 hours to complete their lessons (we purchased a curriculum) and then we're off exploring for the day. Leaving their friends and family behind was hard, but thanks to email, digital photos and cellular phones, they have made the adjustment easily. They are now interested in living somewhere in the Northwest...we'll see!

Tim -

Are you planning on visiting Yosemite National Park? Great time of year to do so, after all the summer crowds, yet the splendor of fall colors!

If so, I'm just an hour away, out the south gate via Hiway 41 down to Fresno. Contact info is in my profile, always glad to spring for a few cold Pepsi's and share some "war stories". Neighbors don't mind a bus parked out front overnite, either!

Plus (Mama & the kids will like this. . .) there's a great new shopping area just 3/4 of a mile from me, including a movie theatre w/ 21 screens!

If you are going to Yosemite, might I also suggest that you visit Jamestown, Sonora & Columbia State Parks, all located off Hiway 120. Well worth the visit to this historical Gold Rush country. From Sonora, it's an easy drive into Yosemite via 120.

You can pick up 120 East either off I-5 or US-99 in Manteca.

Enjoy your journey!!

RJ,

Thanks for the offer...might take you up on that cold Pepsi! We are coming to Yosemite...I'm not sure if we're heading to San Fran first or not yet. I'll let you know! I've been in Yosemite before...loved it! I did a 4 day backpack trip in the backcountry and climbed up the back of Half Dome. It's an amazing place. I'm looking forward to being there without all the other people. We are in Crescent City now enjoying the Redwoods. I'll let you know when we're zeroing in on Yosemite!

Tim -

Catch the City (SF) SB from the Redwoods, then take I-580E > I-205E > I-5N > 120E to either Yosemite or the Sonora area.

Kids will enjoy the antique trains in Jamestown, as well as Columbia State Park - have them check out the old schoolhouse! Well worth the detour.

Between the Redwoods and San Francisco, be sure to meander down the Mendocino Coast on Hiway 1. (Pick it up just south of the Standish-Hickey State Rec Area.) A little narrow and twisty at the north end, but beautiful country, and tour buses do it all the time. Just settle back and enjoy the drive, don't try to "make time". Cut over to Hiway 101 at Petaluma, via Valley Ford Rd, and then follow 101 across the Golden Gate into the City.

From Fresno - should you decide to come this way - it's a short hop back over to the Monterey/Carmel coast, and the spectacular drive down Hiway 1 again to San Simeon, home of Hearst's Castle.

Just whettin' your appetite for adventure!!
