Mark,

According to the service manual 4104 uses 50W mineral oil, not Extreme Pressure, not detergent. I use 50W AeroShell nondetergent aircraft engine break-in oil which is mineral oil. It is the only available mineral oil I know of anymore.

Get a service manual and a parts manual before you do anything else!! These will save you untold amounts of grief, money and time.

These trans have oil pumps as did GMC heavy truck trans in those days. NEVER use 90W gear oil in them.

Not sure about 4106 but I think it has the same Spricer transmission. Ask RJ Long, he has a 4106 and knows for sure.

Does anyone know if there is a problem with using synthetic lube in the differential and transmission on a 1952 GMC PD-4103?????

Bill,

I wouldn't use it in my 4104 which is probably the same setup as your 4103 (Beautiful bus, I tried to find one before I bought the 4104. you lucky dog). There is really no reason to use it and it is expensive.

Check your Manuals as the rear end may or may not use extreme pressure lube, I don't remember and my manuals are out in the cold right now. Some oldies didn't use extreme pressure lubes but some did, it pays to check. I have a bunch of old trucks and I have to always check to make sure, I don't trust my memory.

I don't think you can get the equivalent of 50W mineral oil for the trans in a synthetic. Be sure NOT to use 90W gear oil in the trans, this stuff is too heavy for the trans oil pump.
