Anyone have first hand experience with this dinosaur?

I'm looking to put one in a school bus conversion for the uniqueness of it.

Are they really that loud when they are turning 2100 rpm rather than 2800 rpm?

Anyone have access to a 6v53 who could record an MP3 of it running? I havent heard one in decades.

And finally anybody know where I could get one for nearly free?

I have a couple of recordings of 6V53's if you want them.

As for turning 2100 rpm, you will be losing a lot of horsepower. They really were built to turn 2800
Acording to the field service data book, @2000rpm, with a 6V53n and 50 injectors, you get 166HP. At 2800RPM, with the same injectors you get 210HP.

James, those used to be what was used to power the container forklifts here in Ketchikan. Whenever a barge was loading or unloading, we had no problem hearing them for a mile or more.

One of the operations was near our cemetary. I don't know for sure, but I'll bet they had a lot of complaints if someone made the mistake of trying to conduct services while they were operating.

About two years ago, they started being replaced by other diesels. I can't hear them working unless we are within a block or so. And I'm not that deaf, yet.

There is one in a yard tractor that is used across the street from us, occaisionally. Around three years ago, he got desperate and put a second muffler on the exhaust, right after the first one.

That didn't make it quiet, but it was a lot more like other diesels, after that.

I just wonder if you put the biggest injectors available for the 6v53 and ran it at only 2100 rpm instead of 2800 it might be more easier on the ears.

But, does anyone know if you could shoehorn a 6v92 into a school bus bodied medium duty truck chassis.

We run this in a old crane that i have on the water the driver is very glad when the end of the day comes. it is not really the muffler it is the 6 /53

James, I printed out your question and had an experienced DD mechanic read it this morning and he said "boat anchor" (referring to the 6V53) I remember the time when one of his dump trucks had the 6V53. Jim G. - RTS-II 8V71

I drove plenty of miles in a 6V53N powered Ford C6000 box truck...it DID like to scream (happiest above 2500), which was fine, since it was way underpowered in this truck. With a full under-chassis muffler & a baffled stack, it wasn't any louder than the other trucks with the 3208 Cat or International DT466. It was a heck of a lot leakier, though.

James,

I have a Gillig with a 6V-53 in it. Outside of the uniqueness, I would rather have just about any other engine in the bus.

Without a turbo and the 'V' configuration it really loses it's pull when it gets up on any kind of a hill. Remember, without a turbo it is only rated at 190-210 HP on a good day and that rating is when you are running it up against the stops.

I thought about using it for a whole lot of different applications but decided any application that required long runs at speed would not be a good choice. I don't think you could put enough sound deadening material between the engine compartment and the passenger compartment to keep the screaming down to a dull roar. That is unless you walled off the rear of the bus and put in a fire wall of some sort. It isn't so much the exhaust noise that gets to you(my bus has two mufflers, every other Gillig bus I have ever seen has only one). With the engine turning 2500-2800 the blower really is making more noise than the exhuast.

You would not want to run it hard below 2250. It really smokes if you pull it hard below that point. It prefers 2500-2800. At those speeds it has virtually no smoke.

I was following behind it one day and couldn't figure out why it was smoking so bad. When we got to the end of the run I asked the driver where he had been shifting. He wasn't running it past 2200 because he thought it was going to blow up. Which meant his lower shift point was around 1600 and a lot of smoke.

Because it has such a relatively short power band, you are going to need lots of gears to get the most out of it. With only five gears my top speed is only 52 MPH and I have to row it up almost every hill. It is at least one gear lower on every hill than it's stable mate that has a Cummins C-190.

IMHO, don't even think about a 6V-53. Of for that matter a 6V-92 or 6V-71. If you have to repower you need to find something that will work a lot better for less $$$. A good take-out Cat 3208 or Cummins 5.9L will be about the same HP, get better fuel mileage, and won't leak nearly as much oil.

I had a 6V53T in a 1955 IH 30' schoolie that ran like a forcibly fornicated primate ;}
It was noisy, it was an oil leaker and it was lacking in gears.
Top speed was around 63mph, but it would take you all day to get up there.
Where it really shined was in the low gears on rough roads. I could take it into the national forests when we were logging and never have a problem getting in and out.

Would I do it again? Probably not, but it was fun and I was a whole lot younger then too. I enjoyed the heck out of it though. Especially the looks of the other campers when we pulled into a state campground.

I collected a bunch of Medium duty engine data. Here it is as an excel file. I don't have the 6/71 but it shouldn't be too hard to find. If I were doing this, I would be after the DT 466. Early 90's with a Bosch P pump.
