possibly your tire guy overtorqued your lugs. If the heat that occurs cant expand at the collection area of the lug nut and wheel. possibly from braking?? when making the turns the wheel mught be forcing the stress cracks . aluminum or steel? replace right away and inspect rear wheels for same thing. did any of the wheels have to be rotated in order for the tires to be replaced to the front? old age can be the culprit of these cracks too so I wouldnt pursue a case against your tire man unless you can somehow compare and prove... Does your tiremans invoice show anywhere what the proper torque is and what it was set to? if not go to the store manager and ask him what yours were torqued at and also the air pressure that they were set at .. were the rear tires also inspected and checked for proper air pressure too? These questions will let you know what the heck if they cant seem to come up with a specific answer for you. they should have proper torque charts for your chassis and a good tire man can adjust pressures by load index and axle weights to at least be optimum enough for your uses. d. also keep in mind that torque sequence on your wheels in a very important factor in holding proper torque. gotta do it by hand w/ torque wrench although torque sticks that attach to air gun then socket are being used by tire shops to torque wheels adequately I guess. I would always watch or recheck my lug torque myself. with a properly set torque wrench.. you buy the drinks now!! note .. usually aluminum will mash not crack usually!!! I have a feeling we are talking steel wheels here . Right. |

Hello Jim. Common busnut problem: the selling fleet puts their crappiest rims/tires on the units being sold. We inherit some stuff that should be retired. Look very closely at the threads on the studs. They should be symetrical, same slope up one side and down the other. If they are leaning over towards the outside, someone, sometime, has over torqued your lugs, and you need to replace them too. When abused, the threads get pulled. Then they won't maintain proper torque, as the elasticity has been pulled out. Sometimes, the shaft of the stud gets skinny from the stretching. These too, are dangerous conditions, and require replacement so that the lugs stay torqued at proper values, studs don't start breaking, and the wheels stay on. Province of Ontario put a "Wheel Installer" credential in place back in the 90's. Like a trade licence, if you are offering your services for pay, you need to take a one day training and have the qualification card. Good info, tons of flawed common practices of the past, coupled with poor inspection when servicing are the reason wheels come off. Especially the stud piloted Budd wheels! Your wheels may have already been showing the signs of age/damage when you had the tires swapped. Wheel and Tire associations and manufacturers are a great source of good practices. And new rims look good for years to come!! happy coaching! buswarrior |
