I really appreciate all the answers you guys gave me as to the problem. I thought you might be interested in what the problem was. I gathered up the Prolink and tools I might need to do all the tests you guys had said and headed to my friends place. Long story short. The engine had been overheated slightly and it didn't produce a flash code on the lights but when I hooked up the Prolink right away it showed a code for overheat. I cleared it and NO SMOKE. That sure was a simple fix. I don't understand why there wasn't a flash code but at least it is fixed. I wish there was a way to clear codes without using the Prolink. If anyone knows a way please let me know as it would save me a 1 1/2 hour drive to erase codes in my friends engine. Thanks again for all your help. Bill

Its always nice when its an easy fix. Glad you posted the out come Bill that teaches all of us something. Like I always say you can learn something every day if don't your just not paying attention. By the way I wonder what caused the over heat code to be set. The bus owner may want to keep a close eye on the temp.? Thanks Bill. Tim

Bill

I,m lost - how could a DDEC "historical" Overheat Error code cause the white smoke problem you were having

Pete RTS/Daytona

Someone posted once that removing the DDEC power plug overnight resets the history codes - anyone ever tried this ??

As I understand, DDEC 1 self-erases codes by removing the 12V B+ that feeds the engine ECM. DDEC II and up hold their codes even if the batts are disconnected. They must be reset with a ProLink...
I agree with Pete on the code, don't see how an old overheat code would cause an operational fault...such as smokey starting? Once the engine operates thru some number of trouble free cycles, the codes won't alter the engine function.
I'd be interested in how the code came to be set...when did it heat up and why? The mechanical outcome of overheating could cause your smoking problem.
My thoughts are that the problem may rear its ugly head in the future.
If not already installed, a block heater would be a good move.

What amazes me is the fact that the code didn't show on the flash out of all codes. It flashed 25 on both red and amber lights. When I brought up code on the Prolink it showed the exact date and time as well as the degree of overheat that happened. He remembered the temp gauge rising and it was the shutters that didn't open that caused the overheat problem. According to the Prolink it went to 216*F. Just over the boiling point but enough to set a code normally. For some strange reason known only to the computer it just caused the smoke issue afterward and no flash code. I had heard that DDEC 1 is a fuse pull to reset but no way to reset 2/3/4 without the Prolink. Bill

Thanks for reporting back, Bill.

Computers are lovely things..... when their little brains are clear and thinking.....

It doesn't have to make sence...clear the codes, and now the smoke has gone away.

Best to burn a little incense, down a few medicinal ales and pray to the electron gods that they leave us with sufficient mechanical functioning to fend off the elements and get us home!

happy coaching!

Some time when you are not working or putting in time at the so called job (I know how hard you work at making everyone think you are busy) come on over. Bill
