I'm designing the sleeping quarters for my kids -- 10 and 13 year old boys, I think (definitely boys, guessing that's how old they'll be when we shove off for the first time). My thought is to build bunk beds that can convert to/from a sofa in the traditional location. A simple approach is to use a sofa that folds down into a bed for the lower bunk, and something suspended from the ceiling for the top bunk. I've also heard of a system where the top bunk folds down and "hides" as part of the sofa, but I'm short on details. This sounds interesting -- probably more asethetically appealing than the ceiling-mounted alternative, and perhaps more economical use of space. I've searched the usual places to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas on where I could see more pictures or plans for such a system, or perhaps buy something that suits this purpose? Thanks for any suggestions. John |

my coach has twin beds in the back. i bought 2 buk beds from an outfit that sells gmc motorhome stuff( remember the motorhome in the movie stripes and the ones that were made from 1973-1978). they are the backs of the bed(same as a couch) and they fold up and hang from the ceiling. an excellent design from gmc. if you cannot buy any you cam make them. christopher |

IF you find a book on sail boat interiors , there are many ways of doing this. Root berth is simply 2 pipes with canvass stretched to width by placing the inboard pipe in a set of notches , when needed. A Pipe berth is simply a frame of pipe with canvass stretched , that hinges on 2 hinges , can be sette back , or bunk , just by lifting , hooking in place. The finest is a "Concordia" bunk , which has slats like a park bench to lean on , and then pivots out to tighten as a roots berth . Even has room for blankets and gear ,storage in back rest position. But that one you will need to find a book to show you , I cant describe it easily. FAST FRED |

John, Stop and look at any of the new style double sleepers on the new trucks. They have a double bunk bed that transforms into a sofa. After seeing them, you may be able to find the entire system at your nearest heavy truck salvage yard. Gus Haag |

John, The GMC motorhome is a good place to start and there are many around. Travco/Dodge motorhomes also used the concept of lifting the rear of the sofa into a suspended position for an upper bunk. I used one of these many years ago and found both the sofa and the bunk very comfortable. Steve |

There is an article on bunk beds that convert to a couch in The Coach-Builder's Bulletin that was mailed today. See (www.coach-builder.com) |
