Greyhound bus catches fire; motorists come to the rescue The Seattle Times reports that one person was injured when a fully-loaded Greyhound bus caught on fire early Thursday morning, December 21, on Snoqualmie Pass in Washington state. According to the State Patrol, the fire began about 2 a.m. when one of the bus tires caught on fire eight miles west of Snoqualmie Pass. The State Patrol received a call from one of the passengers and then the driver of the bus called in an emergency, saying the bus was on fire. "Fire personnel and troopers responded to the scene," State Patrol spokesman Jeff Merrill said in a statement. "Upon their arrival they confirmed that the bus was a raging inferno." The bus, carrying 53 passengers, was evacuated. One passenger was treated for minor injuries he received as he was climbing off the bus, Merrill said. Passing motorists offered their cars to keep the passengers warm, and some waited in the cabs of semi trucks. All passengers were taken to the Summit Inn on Snoqualmie Pass until another Greyhound bus could pick them up. The bus, which burned to the chassis, was considered a total loss, Merrill said. Hello Dragging brake would be my guess. Massive heat passed to the rims and then caught the tires on fire. A hot bearing usually leads to the axle seizing and/or the loss of the wheel end. And, of course, we also need to wonder if the cop properly assessed the source of the fire. Some engine room fires, when fanned with a following wind, will look good out the wheel wells once the bus is stopped... happy coaching! buswarrior |

The old tube type tires would get hot quick. How long do you think it takes to catch on fire with the tubeless. Bill |

It is interesting that they mentioned how a passenger called for help. I have a family member that drives for Greyhound. He said they don't have a CB only a cell phone that calls the office. When I asked him about 911 access he said you call the office and they call 911. I wonder how much time it adds to the response doing it this way. He also said he does not like the newer MCI buses with all the fiberglass. He said when there is a fire it turns into an inferno fast. |
