I'll give Terry that one..Gladly.. But..After you get this said bus..and get it home..thinking that its almost better then your wife, you relize that it might need those personal touches that only you can provide it.. Thrill #4 is driving it with all the new stuff that actually works..Thrill 3 is locating it..but before you get from thrill 3 to thrill 4..you need to find those little parts your just dying for. It's no secret that the camper manufacturers and camping and rv stors keep tight lipped about wrecked rv's..knowing full well that if you cant find the wrecks to strip..you'll just go right out and purchase that 10,000 k genset for the extra 12,000 you have in cash in your sock drawer..What the near sited moron dosnt relize is that I'm not going back to his store for ANYTHING cause he didnt have the decency to point at least in the general direction. These are the rambelings of a pissed off bus head who needs a few extras from some wrecked winnies, campers and so on. If anyone has knowlage of a salvage yard in pa, nj, del, md that handels mostly or even a few wreckes RV's please let me know..I would like to finish my 3 year project this winter..or early spring so i can get out of here ;) Maybedream@aol.com BTW, my bus WILL hold at least 25 cases of beer without any probs..I'd gladly pass on a case or 2 for info Thanks for listening to me ramble and rave Pete |

Pete, What you seek may not exist. How often do you see a wrecked motorhome on the side of the road? And when one does crash, I've heard that there isn't much left to salvage (one reason why we find it safer to travel in a bus). The lack of motorhome wrecks also contributes to the relatively low insurance rates on RV's. Although I've seen only one rolled travel trailer in our travels over the last 10 years, we've actually watched two motorhomes and one trailer destroyed by fire in campgrounds. This was almost always preceeded by a load "BANG" as some one was trying to light the oven or stove. Again, not likely much left to salvage. Don't dispair however, there are many salvage places around the major manufacturing locations like Elkhart, Indiana where like new items can be found at great prices. |

I have often wondered where old itascas and winnies go to die. Even mobile homes go somewhere! I suppose if you could find the fabled elephant graveyard that most of the equipment would be pretty obsolete and worn out. |

You might keep an eye out for a local storage yard having a lein sale. However, my experience with that was it was all rotting garbage and there wasn't so much as a window that was usable. Let alone a decent fridge, genset, or AC. All my local scrap yards cringed when I asked if they had any RVs. I decided to scrap my own RV for parts as it was worth more to me in parts than I could sell it for whole. You might try picking up a bargain, running RV and scrap it. Or go to Elkhart. . . |

i have seen quite a few motor homes go through the insurance salvage pool auction here in albuquerque. several have been fairly new, one had an engine fire and most everything behind the drivers seat was high dollar stuff in good shape another looked like a golf ball from hail damage. all sold real cheap and not much bidding interest. find out where the nearest insurance pool salvage yard is and ask them to let you know when they have any motor homes. you might make a deal directly with the insurance carrier who bought it and avoid the auction. |

Anyone know the location of the salvage lots in indiana, or anywhere else? They were posted here some time ago but must have scrolled off. Now thats a thought - buy for salvage an rv whose motor burned up, take what you need and then sell for scrap. Would'nt you know it, I kept my RV in tact, figuring I would use it untill the bus was finished, THAT was HOW MANY YEARS AGO? Well I can tell you the best laid plans will go bad. Partly my own fault, I insisted that the bus be debt free, so goes the pay as you go plan. The other rub is severe time restraints which make my bus conv move so slowly. can you believe, I could walk you through the bus and show you the entire layout, including electrical systems, lighting, ventilation etc to a point you'd think it existed, then you see the shell. LOL Well, most of the roof items have been placed and the outer body is near done, inside framing and electric is next, then insulation. Even at that, part of the electric is in place too, all the while testing the solar system (the panels and regulators, not the star system) which currently maintains the bus batteries. Because I was not stealing parts from the RV, I visited every home depot and builder square sale or 'going out of business' sale, and my endeavors has collected most if not all of the bus interior which now takes up my spare room in the house and the entire garage, save a small corner for my car to squeeze into now and then. AND what do I get for my troubles, An RV that was recently declaired too expensive to fix. That is, its rear leaf springs have sagged, as most will do and the front end is affected by this causing the front end to complain and sometimes dance as it travels down the road. The repairs were estimated well over $1000 for just the front end and the sagging leafs in the rear could use replacement or its all for not!!! Well, it STILL passes safety and EPA testing and is deemed as safe, so far but no major repairs will go into her and she will be used until that occurs but it certainly makes ya start forcing yourself to find time for the conversion. THEN when she is ready, I have to consider a "B" class drivers license(I think). I did ask the State Police, all they were concerned about was that it had an RV plate, seating for under 16 people and was actually an RV. Now I ask, could I have found a more confusing hobby to spend my money on?? I will always have the utmost respect for those who jump into one of these conversions and actually get 'em done AND KEEP THEM for their own travels. Don't think too much of the ones thrown together and sold off right away, you never know where they were saving a buck or two and you just can't cut corners on some of the systems in these rolling homes. Tho not directly considerd, your life very much depends on them. Good luck on your conversions - cd |
