I need help making up my mind on how I want to design my coach I will be boondocking some so tank size and using LP should be considerd. Reading all of your posts can be very confusing to a beginner so I really need details in your posts not how to do it but sizes and brand names. Spare no expence this could very interesting. If you want to join in you will be designing a 45' Eagle |

If you mean what brands for LP and how much LP to carry...Dometic for fridge, any major brand RV range/oven; Atwood for LP/110 hot water; Hydroflame, Suburban, Atwood for LP furnace heat; Webasto for diesel fired boony heat. Two 40 lbs vertical portable LP tanks is more than enough LP for multiple years of use...as long as you don't use the LP furnace too much. Fridge, range, and hot water don't use much LP at all. All but the range will operate on 110VAC too. 100 to 150 freshwater, 50 black, and anywhere from 55 to 125 gallons of grey. Separate black and grey allow the grey water to be dumped without a proper dump station...dumping black is considered poor form. You'll find that LP components don't "spare expense"....they are expensive. There are plenty other ways to get good results. The above describes what I've done. Been very happy with my LP. Using an inverter and home style 110V fridge works, but you gotta cook, so some LP is needed. Hot water in the boonies also requires LP, so...? Before you can design the genset and electrical system, you'll have to make decisions on what will be powered with LP. I make good use of a 6.5kw diesel genset...but, this would not suit the majority of bus owners. About 10K would probably be suitable for a 45' coach. Reckon AC won't be a worry if boonying...have to run the generator to run an AC. Wrico, Onan. and Powertech are common brands. Diesel genset is the only way to go. There are better qualified than me for AC recs, but I would think 3 Cruiseairs should adequately cool a 45' coach. Next! JR |

Our coach has 2 s/s tanks with the grey/black tank the same size as the fresh water (+/- 175 US gal. each)... water in = water out ... and a by-pass on the grey water pipe to allow separate grey water only dumping. The by-pass reconnects with the main dump valve between the knife valve and the dump hose connector. This also facilitates flushing the dump hose after dumping by closing the main dump valve, opening the bypass and dumping the kitchen sink full of fresh water through the bypass, cleaning the drain hose. We have boondocked 18 days (and still had reserve) before dumping because of the size of tanks and don't worry about having a too "solid" mixture for dumping because all the water is there to keep everything emulsified. I think plumbing one grey/black tank plus bypass is simpler and more efficient than working with black and grey tanks. "KISS" formula. FWIW. Good luck! |

I don't want to mislead you on the 18 days of boondocking ... we had access to pit toilets ... but I think we still would have made the 18 days without the pit toilets as we had about 50 gallons of water left ater 18 days. If you build s/s tanks, make sure the corner joints have returns for welding and that you have it properly baffled. Our fridge, stove, hot water and furnace are propane and our propane tank is about 58 gal. ... our battery bank is 8 - L16 type (Crown 350) @ 24 volt with a Xantrex Trace DR3624 inverter (700 amp hour @ 24 volt).
