I just discovered this site and am very excited. I have been hoping for many years to make world tour on a conversion. There is a good chance that it will happen in 5 years. I will be studying in England. At the beginning of my studies I want to buy a suitable bus and spend the three years or so converting it. My question to this group: which brand of bus would you recommend for a trip that would last 4 or more years, with only one year in North America - literally touring the whole world. Dependability and parts availability are key concerns. I will be traveling with my wife and 3 children who, at that time will be in their early teens.

If your going to be in Euorpe and or Asia, it should be a small bus. Don't know about Euorpe but in Asia, campgrounds are rare like hen's teeth.

Don't forget the ablative armor plating and gun turrets. That is if you are an American or GB citizen.
These days we seem to be targets of just about everyone. It's tough when you have a giant bullseye painted on your forehead because of where you are from.

You would be better off just flying in or take a train around the continent and renting a motorhome or caravan to tour each country and small geographic territories individually.

Those International checkpoints, details, visa's, permits and differing rules for each European county will cost you a lot more than you may expect to pay. Traveling with a family just makes things more difficult.

Having a Tour group or someone who sets those things up would be the best because they will have the contacts and resources to help you along the way.

No, I don't have firsthand experience with any of this. I read a lot of news and our American press doesn't tell us what is really going on in the rest of the world. Only what they want to tell us and it's usually edited or re-hashed.

Tom a PD 4104 would do pretty good on the small streets in most countries, I had a friend in Okinawa who restored a 4104 and used it for a transit service, he retired from the Marine Corp in 75 and is still there as far as I know. Parts are available and can be shipped to most countries. This is a very dependable small bus.
35' large bay's and a very dependable 671 Detroit Diesel.
