I just purchased an MC5c for conversion, but here in the State of Washington, it must be titled as a commerical vehicle until the conversion is completed and inspected by DOL. Tabs are almost five hundred dollars a year..., is there anyway around this? |

Most people will keep the state happy by doing a quick and dirty conversion. Get it inspected and then take it all out and start do the real conversion. By quick and dirty, I mean rip all the seats out, buy a porta potty, an air mattress, and a cooler. Drag your living room couch and a card table into it and take it to DMV for inspection. When you get home, do the actual conversion. The particulars vary from state to state, so get the DMV to tell you exactly what consitiutes a 'conversion' and then do what it takes to fit their definition. In my opinion, this is not realy cheating the system. They just want to make sure that the bus is not still being used in revenue service. The law was probably not written by people who have the faintest idea how long it takes to do a conversion. The value of keeping the bus registered and insured while doing the conversion will be worth it. Ideally, keep the bus ready to be jumped in and driven at any time. Use it for weekend getaways and large part (lumber & appliances etc) shopping trips while doing the converion. It will keep your spirits up and enthusiasm high if you can drive the bus! BTW, congrats on the bus! Scott |

Don't know if the rules are different for school buses in WA State, but all I did was remove all but two of the seats. The WSP inspected us and we are titled as a private vehicle. John the busboy |
