Two years ago I was forced to have my Allison MT650 transmission replaced....$10,000.00 CDN. 2 days down the road, I was forced back into another Detroit-Allison shop to repair oil leaks and shifting problems....warranty. Since day one, I have not been able to keep oil in this tranny. Yes the pan leaks a little, but most of the oil seems to be blown out the breather. I just made a 900 mile treck and had to put in 1 1/2 qts of oil. The usual is about a qt every 1000. The transmission runs at normal 180* - 200* unless I work it hard up a mountain grade. And then no more than 300*. All sources I've been able to find indicates I'm over filling. This transmission will continually blow oil till it will no longer shift. (Happened once only). I now spend a lot of time checking the oil. Is there any other reason that could be causing the 'blowing oil' problem? BTW, the warranty was for 6 months or 1,000,000 miles. It was rebuilt and installed by Detroit Diesel-Allison. | ||

Don't know your trans. In general with trannys, a plugged vent on top of the trans will allow pressure to build inside, resulting in blown seals and pushing fluid out the overflow. | ||

That is a good probablity, but in this case the vent is loose and is where the oil is being discharged. The vent hole in the dip stick is also clear. I think my next exercise will be to remove the pan and check how accurate the dipstick is....also replace the cork gasket with a real gasket. If I am overfilling it, I'm puzzled as to why it isn't running hotter. And why, if I do leave it without adding oil, does it continue to throw it out till it no longer shifts. Looking for some thoughts.... | ||

Jim It that figure of 1 mill miles correct for the warranty that they gave you? Also is there evidence of foaming ? Another thought, how about the wrong pan and the wrong dipstick? Joe. | ||

Re: "Looking for some thoughts...." Here's a cpl thoughts (but sometimes I think funny): Is the oil being discharged through the dipstick tube also, or just through the vent? Should there be a small screen inside the vent (or a splash shield inside the tranny), that may be now missing? Have you had the transmission's oil pressure tested for proper pressure? Aww hell.... Might try a 2 or 3 inch piece of pipe to raise the vent higher. If you have the pan off change the O ring on the pickup tube. If it is sucking air, it could grow the fluid in volume enough to throw some out. |
