Byron bought an '81 MC9 in Ohio, and has made middle Georgia where the blower belt came off and the bus shutdown. He installed another belt, but the blower belt keeps coming off. There may be some simple solution to his problem...but it'll take someone familiar with the system to spot it. He's apparently near Lewis Island Georgia.
I have his cell phone number if anyone is in that area, and has a little time to spare, he could use it. Byron's been on the road since early yesterday.
I'm at 704 650 0235. If you can help give me a call and I'll give you Byron's cell phone number.
Thanks, JR

JR,
Has he checked the switch on the air tensioner? That would be the first thing to come to mind. Also check the miter box for smooth turning. Although I have never heard of it, it might be a bad bearing in the miter box. The only other thing I can think of is an alignment problem, but I am not sure what might cause that. Let us know what he finds. Jack
PS: One other thing, is the new belt the same length as the old one. If his bus has the smaller pulley on the miter box, it takes a shorter belt than my bus.

Hello Jack,
Who knows about the belt. The switch is in the downward position, which is "normal"...but the switches can be altered and the positions mixed up.
He may have a displaced blower gear box, or something wrong with the tensioner.
I know his air pressure varies around quite a lot. Not sure that this is the issue. May need a gov on the air compressor. Bus leaks air rapidly when shut down. He made it about 600 miles with the same belt...but now cannot keep one on it. The mount may be loose on the blower. He indicates that the blower gearbox is smooth and turns freely. Someone with some MCI experience may be able to assist.
I gotta go back to work. I got my cell phone if anyone has anything that may help him.
Thanks, JR

He oughta' make sure he's got the proper belt length, first....

After he puts the belt on, he has to wait for the bus to air up,
and make sure the air shutoff for the tensioner is returned to
the on position.

If he races the engine before there's enough air to operate the
tensioner (or if it's been turned off to install the belt, and not
turned back on), the belt will come off quickly with hi revs...

The pressure regulator next to the control valve may need to be adjusted to increase belt tension.

Takes a 7/16 open end wrench to loosen the locknut, and adjust, In for higher, out for lower.

People that don't know what stuff is for sometimes tries to adjust the wrong things and later on someone else has a problem and no idea why... :-)

Just North of Brunswick. Byron's looking for a belt. MCI apparently told him 110", but he has 124" belt on the bus. And a mechanic has measured and confirmed 124" measurement.
I have an 8F-27-1 belt, which measures approx 124". Goodyear.
He drove more than 600 miles with no problem. Now the belt won't stay on. He had a spare belt. It didn't last more than a 100 miles as I understand.
Either something else is failing, or this spare belt is wrong. I dunno.
We've been over the valve on the tensioner. However, these things are avail with different orientation so even though my lever points down with tensioned..his may not? His bus is airing up very slowly. May be the tensioner isn't working, or the valve has failed. Someone familiar with an MCi cooling system would probably see the problem immediately.

Bill,

Lewis Island is off I-95 at exit 49 near Darien. Our singing group sang in Darien this past Saturday.

If you get off exit 49, take a left Hwy 251 West. Lewis Island is part of the Altamaha Waterfowl Management Area.

My only help would be Lewis Bus Lines in Augusta @ 706.792.1800 (Joey) or Tow-Jo @ 706.722.3639. Both places are about 175 miles to his north. Still might be worth a call.

Stoped to see Byron today, it seems his air cylinder that tightens the belt was hanging up. at least so far that seems to be the reason, lubricated the cylinder shaft and all the knuckels. He has ordered belts and they were coming to a local garage tonite , or am by Fed X, all seems to be working, correctly at this time. But I dont know anything about mci, but the basics, I will tell you guys that this kid sure knows where to break down, he is at a closed down gas station, under roof, in the shade, next to a diesel fuel stop, Accross from a restaurant. next to convienience store, WITH a truck garage in the rear, Now broke down he is but that has to be the ultimate set up to be stuck, if there is such a thing, My plans changed so we didnt get to stay in Darien, so we stopped bus and all, to se what we could do, Yes we even got to park under roof along side Byron. Just recieved a call from byron just now, seems he has another belt coming from a local auto parts store that is willing to help him, I am sure we all wish him a safer trip from there, But for being alone first bus broke down far from home. The kid has guts and great spirit, and will make a fine bUSNUT. Bill

Byron's back on the road now. The belt was delivered and installed. He sez it's a better fit than the old belt.
Byron also said the bus aired up completely, drive axle and all within a few minutes. Hope he makes it to Tampa without further issues!
He did find a good place to break down. No doubt. The first breakdown ended up in a rest area.
Many thanks to Bill for taking time to assist.
Best, JR

Byron,
This young fella has been a bus nut for quite sometime he was taking bus photos when he was in high school.
It always good to see a young person who is interested in our hobby.
I wish him all the luck in the world with his MC-9.
