We just had major engine work done on our Detroit Deisel 8V92TA. After starting for the first time, we ran it and after ^15 min., it developed a leak coming from the hole in the bottom of the engine. No not the oil plug. The mechanic found a loose crossover pipe under the head, which he says allowed deisel into the oil. This then caused too much "oil" so it came out the seals, thus causing the leak we saw. We shut off the bus as soon as we saw the leak. The mechanic claims there should be no problems now that the pipes have all be tightened, oil drained, and new oil will be put in. He says the seals are still good. Is there anything we should be looking out for or other concerns? UHG! We've lost confidence! Also, how much oil is needed to fill this, including the oil filter? We will be using 40Wt Rotella T /Thank you for your help |

Sounds to me that your fine and good to go, keep an eye on it and enjoy, the worst part is chasing problems that dont exist.>>>Dan |

S Davidson, since it was not driven, it ought to be all right. The fact that you had major work on it might cause you to have doubts for a while. Regular oil samples will tell you if the oil is free of fuel and let you know when to get oil changes. If that was an 8V71, I would expect it to take around 7 gallons. If you had new liner kits installed, you could have a long break-in period. Sometimes, it takes 25,000 miles to finish this job. Getting your oil analysis done every 5,000 miles or so will give you the information about the break-in. The reason that I bring this up is that with new rings, oil consumption will be higher than normal and compression lower than normal. This means harder starts, less power and lower fuel mileage than when the engine is broken in. Driving the 8V92 hard enough to break it in can be difficult, especially when you are afraid to push it hard. Good luck with your engine. Tom Caffrey PD4106-2576 Suncatcher Ketchikan, Alaska |
