For those of you who can afford to buy your shell directly from the first line carriers, such as Greyhound. Have any of these coaches come with a Jake Brake?

George -

I've never seen a 'Hound equipped with a Jake.

HOWEVER:

Greyhound has extensive maintenance facilities coast-to-coast, and their equipment is dispatched in such a way that there is never more than three days of service before a vehicle passes thru one of these shops. And EVERY time a coach is run thru the shop, the brakes are adjusted.

OTOH, many charter/tour companies, especially those operating in the Rockies or Sierras, routinely order their equipment with jakes, or have them installed. IBME that there are more jakes than transmission retarders, but that may be changing. . .

Never seen a transit bus in service w/ a jake, but have seen them equipped with Telma driveline or transmission retarders. Most have them "plumbed" in such a way that there is no driver control over them, i.e. they can't turn the unit off.
