My 68 5A has an Allison MT 644 which is a 4 speed tranny. It was already in the bus when i got it but i think that the output shaft had to be shortend a little bit. Don't know about any other mods that might be needed.....you might go to the MCI 5er's board and ask there. Not many members and not very active but somebody there can probably give you a better answer.

Ed -

Automatics were never offered by MCI on the 5As, altho they were available on the 5Cs.

TTBOMK, the MT644 is the only one that will fit with the 8V71. The HT series are too long.

OTOH, you can stuff a 6V92TA/HT740 powertrain in the tail and really have a hot rod, especially if you bump the 6V up to 350 hp. This is a common conversion in the MC-5.

FWIW & HTH. . .

Dont know about the 5A but I have a friend wtih a 5C. It was originally a 8V71 standard. It now has the 8V71 with a MT644. He did not do the conversion, he says the drive shaft is real short, but has not had a problem with it. HTH

I have talked to a couple of other 5A owners that have something other than a 644 but don't remember what model they had.
