Does any one know if an Xantrex 4048 Inverter would work for a 24 volt system ? could it be split in some way to drop it down to 24v. just thought i would ask my Girlfriend has two from her previous solar system and she was offering me one for FREE. Yes free. so i would really like to take her up on the offer if it will work on my bus. Randall |

If someone offered me that for free, I would seriously consider a 48 volt system. You would have to use a seperate alternator for the house but that's not such a big deal. Len |

Randall, You don't say which specific model this is (for example, SW4048 vs. SW-Plus 4048), but I assume, as it is a take-out, that it is the SW4048. To answer your original question: the SW series inverter-chargers are, essentially, internally identical. You'd only have to change perhaps a dozen parts to make the SW4048 into an SW4024. That being said, some of those parts are proprietary and completely unavailable, such as the ROM chips (the software load is one of the key differences), schematics are not available to the public, and, if you succeeded in doing it, you would have a one-off item that is not serviceable by any Xantrex outlet. Free is free, though, so, if you wanted to try, your best bet would be to find a SW4024 "carcass," such as a unit that got fried or otherwise failed out-of-warranty in such a way that it simply got discarded. Depending on condition, you could get the ROM and some other parts you'd need for the conversion from that. Seems to me, though, it would be simpler and easier to just sell the SW4048 on eBay, and take the proceeds plus maybe another $200 and buy a SW4024, also on eBay. Or you may find a solar dealer who has SW4024 take-outs who is willing to trade you one straight across, or, again, plus $200 or so. FWIW. -Sean http://OurOdyssey.BlogSpot.com |
