I have a 1989-90 Generac NP65G. Manual says to adjust the engine speed so the frequency is 60.5 to 63.5 hertz, and the voltage output should be 121 to 127. Here's my problem. I can't find a starting place to adjust from. I hook my meter up and the frequency jumps all over the place. Seems to me it should be some frequency and I could raise or lower the engine speed and that would affect the frequency. Voltage jumps from 122 to 125 with no load. Meter is good as far as I can tell. I hook the meter to my other generator and it sticks right to 60, I hook it to a outlet in the garage and it sticks right to 60. Any ideas?? |

Did you try it with an electrical load? |

You gotta load the generator down so it will stabilize. Sounds like the governor search/surge is knocking the readings off. Oh.. Wait you said Generac... Hmmmmm.. Put a quartz shop light on it and see if it stabilizes. |

I used to spec Generac generators at our communications sites until I tried to get a low power FM transmitter to work with one. Even when turned way down to just 100 Watts transmitter output, this 7 kW Genehack was going nuts. Generac said that it was harmoics causing the governor to search, but they could never get it to work. It seems that Generacs are happy with resistive (heat) loads but don't like inductive loads. I now spec another major brand and have had no more problems. |

Thanks guys, you are all correct, It is a piece of junk!! I knew that going in. I just need to get it patched up so I can swap it out with another bus that we don't use much. I put a load on it and it did stabilize.....for a little while..... long enough that I have it close enough it will run both ac's. This thing has bent the valves and rocker arm several times. I am so good at pushing the valve spring keeper off I can do it with one hand, and I know which socket to put the rocker arm on and hit it with a hammer to staighten it our. It's been fun, but I got some other things to do. |
