I am stipping the paint off of my 4905 bumper and I found this weird green stuff on the bumper. It is an applied substance, Zip Strip doesn't touch it, heat doesn't touch it. What is it and how do I make it go away? It looks like the remains of old plastic wrap for shelf storage, assuming the bumper has been replaced at some point. On a side note - what pixel Length by Width is proper for posting pictures? |

Try "Purple Power" cleaner on a small inconspicuous spot. That stuff is great for removing a layer of anything off anything.. But... it can also remove the original paint.... Plain dish detergent and sugar (1/2 + 1/2) is safe and works better than commercial hand cleaners, and will also take glue, tar, etc., off painted surfaces.... |

Hey Doug, I wish this was Zinc chromate! I found that on the aluminum panel below the windshield and it comes off allright. I have a new computer that is making it harder to shrink a picture to 30k. My resoloution is still too high. Has anyone ever recieved a part that was factory wrapped for storage? I suspect it is like the army's cosmoline (SP?). |

Genn, have you tried a little heat from a propane torch. It might flash right off. Should be able to do easily without damaging the chrome. Richard |

Are you SURE it is not the chrome that is missing? Mine looked similar to that in a couple of places and over time that is what has come forth. FWIW RCB |

Is it possible that the green stuff came from roswell? Be careful it might start growing and cover Your bus. John |

The bumper may have been electrocoated with zinc chromate or copper before being chromed. That was normal in the early days of plating large items. It filled the natural grains of the raw metals. Abrasive blast and have the bumper completely chromed again or abrasive blast, prime and paint with imron or expoxy paints. You will need to blast the chrome plating off and clean up the metal before painting. Use Garnet abrasive to cut the chrome... |

DrDave...isn't that the way all re-chroming is done anyway?....blasting first? I feel you are dead on on your post. Thanx for the wisdom. RCB |

Chrome is removed for replating the same way it is applied, via electrolysis. Then you copper plate the piece and apply new chrome. You can't plate over zinc chromate or any other paint process. The high demand of Chinese chrome shops is the reason copper is so high in price. Cheers...JJ |

JJ...I had always thought that (what you wrote) but someone told me I was mistaken that sand blasting was the way to go and infact, led me to believe that it was all done that way. ....... Thanx for the confirmation. Anyone got a good chrome shop that doesn;t charge an arm and a leg?....El Paso ( we are in Las Cruces) quoted nearly $700 for the front bumpers and guards alone....not including the rear. RCB |

Thanks for all of the responses! I was gone over the weekend and didn't catch up on these posts. This bumper is not chromed and never was. It is a GMC 4905 bumper and is aluminum with the standard (clear?) anodizing. The andodizing in the exposed areas is in excellent condition. I like the roswell idea though. |

Hey RC, I'm wondering if that $700 figure would drop by 50% if you did most of the polishing yourself? Jay 87 SaftLiner |

Good question. Just seemed like an enormous amount to me...and apparently to another shop in AZ and one in Albuquerque...though I did not get a quote from either of them. RCB |
