I recently found a good deal on two of the large, heated/remote, chrome Velvac mirrors for my Thomas coach, but have an issue with the bases being incorrect.
I either need flat bases, or a different radius than what I have.
I guess I could have some adapters machined, but want to take advantage of the expereince I always find here.

Anyone have any experience with this issue?

Thanks.

The mirrors have two different arc bases, I don't know if they have a flat base, you should be able to get both type bases in your local bus surplus center. Or call Northwest RV in Oregon, I was just up there and I know they had both curves in stock.

Hey Ray,

Thanks for your input. There are actually 4 or 5 different radii in Velvac mirrors, but I need flat bases if I can get them.

Local bus surplus center? I'm not sure if I have one of those in Colorado or not.

I'll check your source on Monday and let you know how it goes.

I just ground the bases to match the contours of my bus. Just grind a little at a time to avoid going too far. Donn

Hey Donn,

Thanks for the reply, but I don't think that method will work for my application.
I'll look up the local machine shop, and see if I can get some adapters cut from a block of SS.

hi jay

bought some velvac mirrors 6 months ago. they have curved bases. made up some transition pieces with matching velvac curve on outside and flat other side to fit coach. (gmc rts). before welding up these stainless steel interims, we checked with velvac for new bases that are flat. velvac quoted retail price of $235 each. don't believe you'll get a machinist to whittle those puppies out of a stainless steel block @ ten times that amount.

if you'd like specific info on how we went about the process, feel free to call @ 931 247 3060. gave thought to grinding to fit as did Donn, but ran out of nerve.

Got my mirror bases back today from the machine shop...they now fit the radius perfectly, and I expect I'll mount them this week.
Machine shop cost? $0...Good neighbor.
