I've got a 671 detroit that blew up the other day.Threw a rod. What would be a good price for a total engine rebuild?

Depends --

In frame or out?

Was the block damaged, or only the head?

Did you bend the crank?

Where are you located? (Work is more expensive in , say, San Francisco than, say, Kansas City.)

A ReliaBuilt 6-71 ought to run around $15,000, complete. (But that's sitting on a skid, not installed.)

A rebuild can run anywhere from $5,000 all the way to $20,000, depending on (1) shop rate in your location (2) how many good parts are still left on your block and (3) whether or not the motor has to come out of the frame.

A little more information would help us give you a better idea (and maybe some suggestions for rebuilders).

(Who is having his 8V92 in-framed even as I type.)

Its a out of frame total rebuild. I found another complete engine. They will use block and crank. Everything else new. Total price is $13,000. I'm in Shreveport La. I had hoped that the price would be a little cheaper....

I was quoted about $10,000 for a 4-71Turbo by Diesel exchange about a year ago.

Why not, a used 671, rather than a rebuilt?

6-71's aren't known for throwing rods unless they are overreved, let over run on a down grade, or dropped a valve. Even if they are run low on oil, they usually seize a piston before crank is damaged.

micheal: if you get a used 6-71 make sure it is the right rotation. buses have left-hand rotation and trucks have right-hand,, I had a friend that bought one out of a truck, installed it and WOW what caous did that start.. Everybody was either running or blaming the other It was very funny when you put a l-h starter on a r-h engine and fire it off. that was funny. hey chessie

Marvin -

Good point, but Michael's coach is a Flxible Hi-Level, which uses a T-drive configuration. Consequently, it's a RH engine, not a LH like the V-drives use.

John -

Chances are, if, in fact, Michael's engine threw a rod, his block is toast.

Buying a used engine, of unknown history, after just losing one, might be just a little skittish.

OTOH, if his block is toast, buying a used one and having it rebuilt with the best of both isn't such a bad idea.

FWIW & HTH. . .

:-)

6-71's are very easy to change direction, although I would find a good 6-71TA running takeout, as those hi levels are on the heavy side, and the added torque and horsepower would be welcome. That is a beautiful Flex BTW. It has torsilastic suspension doesn't it?

Yes It does.Has a good ride too. I found an engine that came out of a 1974 Flx parlor coach. It has a higher compression engine than the other engine so I hope that It has a little more power. The mechanics at united engines say that it is in great shape, and sould be complete in a couple of weeks on the overhaul.

higher comp? You mean higher horsepower? If so, it probably has larger injectors. N65 is about as high as you would go unless it has a turbo. Of course, engine timing would be changed to go with the N-65's, which is easy to do while it is out of engine bay. Is the engine they are rebuilding have a 4 valve head?

Thanks, The motor has a 4 valve per cylinder. I hope that more compression means more Hp.

Michael,i saw a bus like your only green in color at Kasier Wheel in Eugene Or that the owner had installed a D466 IH engine. he told me it was a very easy install because they were about the same size and the cost was under 5 grand for the engine and all parts to install it,he didn't tell me how much labor he had in it
