I want to continue a conversation about skylights that began as a sideline in another thread. I hadn't really thought about them before, but they make alot of sense. I would like to know more about the "marine hatches" and how difficult they are to install. Does anyone make a skylight that would retrofit onto my existing emergency exit hatches? Any negatives about skylights?

I am using the standard 14x14 RV sky lights. Same size as an AC hole. You can put in a skylight and change it to an AC later if you want. They are pretty easy to install once you get past the odd feeling of cutting a big hole in an otherwise perfectly good roof.

I used marine hatches, about 22x22". the window is actual tempered grey tint glas. they go in the same as the RV 14x14 units and let in a lot of light. Great for ventilation and some come with screens too. I had a commercial tint added, kinda mirror like look, keeps the heat out. I am really happy with them. I dont know of a hatch or skylight that will fit the emerg exit hatch. You will have to fill it in and cut out the 14x14 hole. you can probably find a marine hatch that could fit also.
I bought mine from a marine salvage company, saved about 60% compared to catalog prices. My marine hatches are overbuilt compared to the 14x14 rv type in my rv. These hatches are really tough, make sure you get one that will drain water if you want to keep it open when you go out, some only seal when closed., Hope this helped cd

I found my escape hatch skylight along side the road! It was a brand new house type "double glazed bubble" type. Since the excape hatch on a GMC 4905 had a raised lip around it already, leakage will never be a problem, it just went on over the whole thing. Although my bus came with factory installed skylights that I left in, I think the marine jobs are far superior. You can go to this link, and amongst the 95 photos there you can see how I finished the inside around the skylights. http://www.shutterfly.com/my/osi.jsp?i=67b0de21b31f18194524

Thanks guys. Don, I did look at your photos and I liked what I saw. Fred (or someone), I was hoping you might be able to suggest a few marine websites that would have this type of product.

Instead Of web sites that are short on info , I recomend you get catalogues from big suppliers.

1 800 555 1212 is information , FREE for co with 800 # .

So get the # and call at least these 3 catalogue "Discounters"

In CA is West Marine , get the Full (combined motor boat and sail boat) cat.

Defender Industries , the grandfather of 'em all in CT.

And Hammilton marine in RI.

All are FREE , all will be a big help in any area you dont have a background in.
