Looking for a little help as the POs seem to have palyed around quite a bit with this puppy. '53 4104. There is a air valve stem that if I push in the center(like when you let air out of a tire) stops the engine. I am looking in the manual and it is not helping too much. I am attaching 2 links to a pic host as I have not managed to get pics small enough for this site.
1st link thing on engine block with valve stem

2nd link thing on the bulkhead wall called I beleive a magnetice valve or is thuis what ya'll call a skinner?

Photo #1 I don't recall if this might be a previous owner add on or not as it has been years since I owned a PD4104.
Photo #2 is a Skinner Valve.
The item next to it is the old radiator shutter and air filter regulator.
The item next to the regulator it is a very early air compressor governor type 01.
What is the serial number of your 1953 PD4104?
If it's between 003 and 383 it's a ex Greyhound 4104.

#1--I think this is the engine shut-off. Air pressure is required to shut off the engine so it is a mystery to me why the engine shuts off when you open the valve? I don't think mine has this valve but will check in daylight tomorrow.

#2--I don't know what a Skinner Valve is but I will also find out where this thing goes tomorrow. It is obviously electric-air.

The shutter control is not connected to the shutter. I think it is supposed to be connected to the elbow at the top and the valve at the bottom is a drain but not certain. Will also check that.

I had to go outside anyway so I looked at my '54 4101.

#1--Mine does not have this fitting on the side of the engine shutoff valve.

#2--The black line going down on the right side of the Skinner valve goes to the shut off valve in #1.

The top elbow on the shutter air reg does go to the shutter control/thermostat on top of the engine. Obviously yours is not connected, most shutters don't work anyway. Thankfully, mine works very well.

Unless this elbow is plugged air could be leaking from it. My regulator has an air shutoff valve on the air supply line into the reg. Yours may have a valve but I can't tell for sure in the photo.

To repeat the earlier post, the engine shutoff valve requires air pressure to shut off the engine. The electric Engine Run switch second from the top on the left panel opens this air valve to shut off the engine. When the engine is first started there is usually not enough air press to stop the engine so using this switch won't work.

I cannot even guess why letting the air out of this side valve on yours stops the engine unless it is plumbed to operate the reverse of the original?? Logically that would mean that the engine won't start without air pressure in the valve?? Weird!!

I agree, weird. I figured the same that no air pressure would get me no start. I guess I'll have to open up the valve cover and have a look. Bus is a thousand miles away right now, i'm just gathering the knowledge to rig up a proper shut down. Anyone have info on tie rod ends (or just the bearing and spindle in the tie rods ends?)
