The temp gauge was erratic during the third day on the road almost imperceptibly rising until it decided to increase my b/p and max out. Having no indicator of an actual overheat event, we parked for the night, the next AM, I installed a new gauge, same reading. There are three candidates as far as I can determine to be the sending unit. Is it possible to verbally identify this one for me?
What in the world is a shutterstat? Not sure of spelling; label is damaged. Thanks JME

The "shutterstat" is a temperature controlled valve that opens and closes the shutters on the radiator.
there should be 2 senders on one thermostat housing and 1 on the other. One on each housing should be for "hot engine" warning light and buzzer. The "second sender" on the housing should be for the gauge. When looking at the senders, 2 should look the same, the gauge sender should look slightly different. Hope this helps, Jack

U don't say what your bus or engine is, but I suspect that your shutterstat operates your engine fan rather than shutters. When the temp reaches the set point of the shutterstat, it closes off air to the fan and allows it to engage. They come in ranges of 180 to 195, 5 degree increments and available at most truck parts houses. A test of this as your problem would be the disconnect the air line from the shutterstat to the fan clutch housing (cap the discharge fitting on the shutterstat) This should permanently engage your fan. Also, good practice dictates that senders and guage units should be replaced as a matched set. My 6v92 has a common thermostat housing that has all 3 senders and the shutterstat also in the same housing. 2 senders are for guages(front and rear) and 1 for warning system.

My 4905 with DD 8v71 does not have shutters. Is there a automotive type thermostat hidden in there some place within the system?

I have a 4106 with an 8V71. I just tested 2 of the 3 sending units that are on the thermostat housing located on the front (fan side) of the engine. 2 of them are electric and one is sealed tube that operates the rear gauge. To test I turned on the key-switch (engine run switch in front of bus) and then connected a wire to the sending unit stud and the other end to ground. If it is the sending unit for your dash temp gauge, the gauge neadle should be pegged to the highest temp. Have some one watch the guage while you do this. it could be the wiring and not the sending unit as well. To test connect another gauge to the unit. If the rear temp guage is electric, try switching the wires between the guages. If the problem now shows up in the rear gauge then you need a new sending unit or you may have a bad ground between the engine and the bus (though I doubt it). If the problem stays with the front guage, then you have a bad gauge or faulty wiring.
