I am trying to help my nephew who is 800 miles away. He has a 4905 that leaks a LOT of oil when driving. He is not a mechanic but is reasonably mechanical (plumber). He has discovered a hole on the "front passenger side" of the 8-71 block (the lower right rear side near the bell housing as you face the flywheel) that looks like a plug may have fallen out. He says it is bigger than 1/2" pipe but a 3/4" plug will not thread in. He says he can stick his finger inside the engine through this hole. Can anyone figure out what he is referring to or has anyone got a picture of this part of the engine I can forward to him so we can figure this out? (I particularly need to help him because he bought the bus from us.)

Could it be the airbox drain tube that somehow got away. If so look at the other side drain fittings and replace with identical fittings (Brass and short copper tube) ? WAG!

Ken, it's bigger than 1/2" pipe. Big enough to get a finger inside all the way. If I remember correctly, air box drain is about 1/4" pipe. Thanks though for the suggestion.

I would look on my bus but it's an 8V-92 & may be different.

Jim, it makes sense then that it's in the oil gallery. I have an MCI so I'm just trying to imagine what it might be on a 4905. My alternator gets it's lubrication for an oil gallery fitting in about the same place. FWIW.

Perhaps Cliff or Jerry Liebler might be better equipped to help with the problem.

Jim if its a 1/2 hole on the side of the block and not on the bellhousing. That was designed to put an oil return line from an oil cooled alternator or a quick fill container.Hope this will help.

Hi Andy,

Would that be on the "right" side of the block, (looking at the rear) just fwd of the flywheel housing? Could it be a bit larger than 1/2" pipe? The eyes & hands at the bus say it's bigger than 1/2 but smaller than 3/4.
