The detirmining factor is how safe you want to run , and if you do your own maint.

A pit is a big help as blocks and crawling under is slow , and weather related.

Larry Planchno of Bus Traider has the ONLY book that covers the cost on an excellent maint sked.

But its for maint ONLY , so something that craps out is extra.

EG; Good maint would have you replace the wheel bearing seals , when you first go over the coach.

If you don,t and loose the wheel bearings , that's extra.

Fuel milage as a guess for a non hot rodded MCI would be 6 mpg.

I would add to Fred's post, not only how safe you want to run, but how closely you want to comply with the maintenance manual.
I don't know of a single bus person that completely follows the book, so we are all on a "modified maintenance program" I suppose you could say. If you are not going to do the maint yourself, the cost can be prohibitive to remain safe AND reliable. For instance there are those that maintain that tires should be replaced at an early age, that alone could add in the neighborhood of $100 per month to your costs - even if you never left your driveway! Oil changes based on calendar days (as the book calls for) rather than miles driven, at 7 gallons per change for instance will also eat away at the cookie jar funds.

I spent some extra money up front, when I was having the bus safety inspected to change a number of things (not required for the safety) my mechanic suggested. This included replacement of the 16 radius arm bushings as well as some other items. Based on what my mechanic advised, these items will probably last for a long time.
