okay here goes , looking for any and all info for options of putting a auto trans in a 1965 MCI-5A. I recently accquired my dad's bus which has an 8v71 with a manual 4 speed. Great running bus the problem is the driver (me) has a bad left knee very painful to drive for anylength of time. I know there is only one auto trans that will work with the 8v71 and several with a 6v92 turbo. What about a series 50 ? Can you still use the blower system for the radiators as they are driven by the 8v71. What trans will work and does anyone know of a shop that would perhaps convert . I am on the east coast (Myrtle Beach,S.C)Thanks ED |

The best setup you could have is a series 50 and 3060 world transmission. This would fit in the mci5. Other than that you could leave the 8v71 and put in the allison 640 trans. You can get the work done at Central Florida Bus Repairs in Lakeland, Fl |

Ed, that conversion would cost you big bucks and you are so limted on the gear ratio on the 5 like jack said use the 640 by far the cheapest way out for you unless you just want the 50 series with a ATEC transmission (Message edited by luvrbus on November 25, 2007) |

Ed, why not use a model 740 trans? They are used in everything (or were before electronic engines) so both a trans & parts will be available. We have one behind an 8V92TA on our Eagle & it works great. Jim-Bob |

jim, the 740 is to long to fit in a mci 5 unless you change the engine to a 6V like some have.not much room in the engine compartment on a 5 between the bumper and drop box |

I don't know all the details, but a 740 will fit in a 5 & run for years. A friend has one that is as the factory built it - 8v71 & allison 740. Custom coach conversion from new - never in commercial service. Stainless holding tanks too. FWIW |

Kyle, maybe Custom Coach found a way to do the 740 and 8v71 set up in the 5 but it did not come from MCI.i heard at 1 time MCI owned Custom Coach (Message edited by luvrbus on November 28, 2007) |

If Custom Coach did it, then a 740 WILL fit, contrary as it seems to conventional wisdom. I suppose it would be prudent for one considering the change to look at a 5C with the 740 & take a few notes & measurements for comparison to what they currently have. This would verify what is required for the swap rather than dismissing a posibility due to hersay from those that claim "it can't be done". |

When the MC-5C was in production, MCI only offered two powertrains: 8V71/Spicer 8844 4-spd manual or 6V71/HT-740 automatic. TTBOMK, the 5C was the only MCI 35' coach that offered the automatic option, it wasn't available on the 5A or 5Bs. FWIW & HTH. . .

Mines a 6 V 71 with a 740 to the best of my knowledge, and trust me, there would not be room for a 8 V in the present configuration. She's full from the bumper to the rear axle. |

I had a nice talk with my buddy that has the custom coach converted (from new) 5-A. It is a 8V71 with the 740 automatic. The factory didn't put it in there, but it does fit, drop box & all. He doesn't know if the setup will last tho as he only has 175,000 miles on it ;) All trouble free with no issues. It doesn't appear to have had any body modifications done to accomodate the 740 either. When he gets the time, he will take a few measurements & possibly a few pictures for posting so all can know what was required for the install to work. |
