I'm looking for a used, salvaged, surplus engine. It needs to be a water cooled diesel engine, with a HP rating in the 10 to 20 range. I'm kicking around the idea of building a DC generator for my bus, rather then using an AC generator. If you have an idea where I might find what I'm looking for, just let me know. Thanks. |

I found a good used 2 cyl, 18 hp Yanmar engine on a junk Thermo King reefer unit. Abt $350. Check the local truck junk yards, or Thermo King repair shops. I am doing about same thing, except I'm going to run a 7 kw ac alternator. One problem you may also have is how to configure a govener to the engine. I haven't figured that out yet. Perhaps reading the frequency and adjusting the speed control to give me always 60cps out. That will guarente corect voltage reguardless of load. Lots of surplus dc gen sets on ebay. 24 vdc though. |

Darryl & Jim, I just bought a very nice belt driven govenor form Saturn surplus. They were all out of the "Hoof" govenors (aluminum casting) but they had several good cast iron units. Looks to be a good unit, although I havn't run it yet. www.saturnsurplus.com Jock Fugitt |

Just a thought, I would bet that the Thermo King has a constant speed govenor that can be set to the correct rpm. I have a thermo king, but havn't started working on it yet. Jock Fugitt |

A couple of notes on governors. First, all diesels must have a governor to idle, and most use the governor to limit top rpm. So you might be able to lower top speed limit to correct frequency needed. Also, if the diesel in question does not have a full range governor, most injection pumps have a counter part pump on another application with full range capability so an injection shop could advise on converting an existing governor in the injection pump to full range style. Full range means it will hold speed anywhere in the range based on lever position regardless of load. If your engine has full range governor, then a simple fixed threaded rod can be fastened to the lever and adjusted for speed set point. Also, Pierce makes a little governor that is belt drive and was used on many industrial applications such as fire pumps. Gravely Tractor dealers sell them as an accessory for the tractor. I put one on mine, about $100.00 from Gravely, but maybe $35.00 else where. Good Luck!!!! |
