Hi all,

My mother-in-law died very unexpectantly last night.

My wife and I are now in the position of having to close up my mother-in-laws house and transporting everything we don't want to give away or junk right away. We will need to transport everything from Grand Rapids, MI to Castle Rock, WA.

If anyone knows of good bus or box truck in the greater western MI area, please e-mail me direct or call me on my cell phone (360-431-7759).

My only requirements for the vehicle is that it be weather tight, have a working heater (I think it may get a little cold going across the Rockies at this time of the year), the power package has to have enough life in it to make it from MI to WA state, and the tires need to have enough tread to give me adequate traction.

Thank you for your input. It is greatly appreciated at this time.

Sincerely,
Mark R. Obtinario

Mark,
First our condolences to you and your wife. To find a truck, go to www.traderonline.com Click on Truck Trader. You can search the area around Grand Rapids. Hope this helps, Jack

Since you're asking for either a bus or a box truck, I'm assuming you're not planning to convert the bus.

If it were me, I would rent a truck for the move unless you can't do it all at once. Any bus or box truck that rivals a rental in price will probably not be a good runner.

If it is just to get the "stuff" moved, check out www.upack.com This is part of ABF trucking. They drop off a trailer, you load and they haul. When it arrives at the other end, you unload. You only pay for the number of feet of the trailer you use. And they furnish the driver, fuel, etc. We compared this to U-haul and they were slightly over 1/2 of U-haul's rate. U-hauls' rate did not include fuel and you have to drive. Jack

Thanks for all of the input.

I needed to purchase a bus or truck because it would have to serve as a storage unit once I got home with all of the "treasures".

I ended up purchasing a 1988 IHC/Thomas school bus. It was a pretty ugly old school bus at the start. By the time it got plastered by a bunch of birds and 2400+ miles of road grime it is now a really ugly movable storage unit.

Several thousand pounds of "treasures" and two kitty cats traveled with me across country without incident.

That is not the sort of trip I would recommend to anyone. Particularly in a vehicle with which one has no real knowledge. And most particularly at this time of the year.

Fortunately, IHC builds some pretty good stuff that even the worst school district maintenace programs can't screw them up totally beyond hope.

So for the price of what a rental truck would cost I now have a moveable storage unit sitting in my yard.

Again, thanks for your input.
