What do you guys think a 4905 with 4 speed will get miles per gallon wise. I'm estimating 6-8 mpg on highway..... Am I close? Sorry, one other question, whats the best reference guide out there for conversions... Most of my questions are about designing the water, propane and electrical systems to include bat sets, inverters, etc |

Keith - 6-8 mpg is a good guesstimate. A simple rule of thumb: 125 gallons useable at 5 mpg equals 625 miles equals time to start looking for a fuel stop. There's no ONE source for the reference guide you're looking for. Dave Galey and George Meyers' books are pretty good, both available from links on the main BNO page. HTH, RJ PD4106-2784 Fresno CA |

My 4905 with 318hp 8v71 and Allison V/730 Automatic always gets 6.4 to 6.6. 4000 miles in the last 3 months, all trips included hill climbs, some from elevation 0 to elevation 7,700. exception: the one trip I got 6.0: was a fast trip of 400 miles, all flat and low and hot, just running flat out at 78 mph. You should get better with a stick. |

I am geared high with mine, so cruise at 70 mph at 1500 rpm. I just made a 1000 mile last week, and on a leg I checked, got 7.5 at 75mph, some genset running off that too, and I am very heavy pulling a toad. By slowing down, your fuel mileage improves lots. |

With a 4-speed Spicer and 265HP my 4905 has averaged 7.8 mpg for the last 20K miles (including twice coast-to-coast, with mountains on each end). Sea Level, high barometer, low temp. and humidity, and 50 MPH it does 10.2mpg. Pushing hard through the Rockies hot and humid it dropped to 6.9mpg. Be sure to keep your oil-bath or air-filter CLEAN. Cheers...JJ |
