I have a allison vh-9 and want to change the fluid. The fluid in it looks like engine oil!

I read on this board that some transit bus companies used 30 weight motor oil.

Is this good? Is dextron better?

I did see tractor transmission/hydraulic oil at wally world (wall mart) is this good to use?

what is the best in your experiences?

thanks much Stevebnut

Check the shop manual. The AT/MT/HT transmissions could take all of those, but the new World transmisions only take Dextron III or the Allison Transynd synthetic. Best bet - use Dextron, since it will give you better operation in cold weather.

I use Delo 400 15-40 in my VS2-6, but I understand Dextron would be fine in the VH transmission. Loren Joplin @ www.gmbus.com has more information on this and I suggest you drop him a line. Loren has always been very helpful with my T6H5308A transit bus restoration. His E-mail address in on the web site.

There are some slip sleeves in there that I understand MUST have Dextron, like the book says it should.
There is some bulletin that allows motor oil in the V730, but to my knowledge, NEVER in the VH or VS series.

Thank you all for your help.

I think i will use the dextron to be sure. In the future I want to change to an overdrive tranny like the v730 for better highway speed.

Be careful there, ALL the V drives are overdrive, just different amounts of OD. The V730 will always give you less speed than the original manual transmission, you might look at the ratios in a VS2 6 or 8 and find they better suit your needs, or a change of differential with a V730
