I have an old ('57) Kassbohrer 40' bus that I paid $500 for. I mainly wanted it for the motor. I drove it 400 miles home, and it ran pretty good. The reason I needed the motor is that I also have a '63 Eagle 01 that has a bad motor. It was ran without water. It runs good, but blows steam out of the exaust. Also, it creates bubbles in the coolant resevoir. It's my understanding that this indicates possible head gasket problems.
I gave $1500 for this bus. I'm hoping to put the 8V71 w/ jakes from the $500 bus into the 01, and also keep extra parts from the Kass (old Eagle) like the suspension, rear-end, etc. at least long enough 'till The Eagle is road worthy. I plan on raising the roof prob. 6" or so, as I like what this does for added insulation, wire chase etc. The only problem is the fact that I'm truly a bus nut and therefore don't have time to work on my Eagle because my wife and I are too busy vacationing and driving around in our converted '68 GMC 5301. It's OK, but truly lacking in storage, power and style. I need to discipline myself and throw that bus away or get rid of it so that when I find myself without a bus, maybe I'll have more ambition to get the Eagle converted and on the road! The Eagle is much more superior. A friend of mine calls the 5301 a chicken in contrast to the Eagle. Anyhoo, just thought I'd add a bit of talk to the Eagle club's board.

Hello Glenn,
Sounds like you have a plate full, and no time to start.:) One thing of note, the 8V71 engine does not have head gaskets per se, but a group of "O" rings etc. the most common problem encountered when running these engines hot is cracked heads. End result is the same, just more expensive to replace heads than gaskets.
You did not say what transmission you have in the O-1,(probably 4 speed), if you do not mind shifting gears, when you change the engine, it would also be a good time to change to a 9 or 10 speed trans, I guarntee you it will make a million dollar difference in your overall performance and satisfaction with the bus. The 9 or 10 speeds are plentiful at truck salvage yards, they are almost bullet proof and quite reasonable to purchase. Thousands of these trans. were used in trucks with the 8V71 engine, and they worked very well. The two transmissions are the same except that the 9 speed is an overdrive.
Good luck and enjoy and welcome to the poor Eagle owners group. T.Haag

Dave,

Look in your yellow pages under Truck Parts Used, I am not that familar with the Modesto area, but I am sure there are plenty of salvage yards in the area. Good hunting.

This my first attempt to communicate with the rest of you busnuts, I hope you'll except me as a part of your group and try to help me make some decision on the purchase of an eagle that I have found and want to buy. I have just become a member of the Eagle group but I have been a bus nut for a long time, as for as having a special place in my heart for the smell of diesel fuel burning and a longing for another Eagle parked in my back yard and most of all the wonderful feeling of going cross country in America's favorite tour bus. I have found a 1973 Eagle that is still a passenger bus, it needs some repairs.
It was used by a charter line in it's later years and was sold to a local mfg. company to hall laborers 3 shifts per day 7 days per week for the last three years. They keept it on the road all the time and patched just enough to keep it going.

#1--The 4 speed transmission scrapes when trying to engage into firs gear, is that normal? or does that indicate clutch problems.
#2--It rolls blue smoke when taking off.
3#--It's very hard to get into reverse
4#--The air is not cool but they driver that last used the bus said it was cooling.
5# It must have all new tires.
I'll stop with that as for as the repairs go.
I appreciate any help any of you can offer.
The body looks real good for the year model, everything considered.
They want $10,000.00 for it, what do you think?

Sounds like a VAST amount of money for somthing that has been "Rode Hard and Put Away Wet" for 3 or 4 years.

The Eagles that New Jersey is selling are the same price ,15 or 20 years newer and many folks are writing of purchasing one and driving 2000+ miles home no sweat.

Fast Fred, thanks a lot for your comment and advice, that was along the lines of what I was thinking on the old Eagle.
Thanks for the info on the Jersey buses.
