Yesterday as I pulled on the highway my Trans Oil light came on. I pulled to the side of the freeway, checked the oil, it was a bit low so I added two quarts to bring it to the hot-run full mark. The light went out. 2 miles and the light came on again and the engine temp went up to 220, it always runs at 170-180. I pulled over and idled it for a few minutes, temp went down and light went off. Pulled back on the road and the light goes on, temp back up to 220. I topped off the cooling water, temp down a bit, light stayed on. Pulled back on and temp is at 220, light on stays there for the next 20 miles where I get off. I lost about 3 gallons of water, I topped it off and the light want off and the temp went down. It shifts fine, if there were no light or guage I would never know there was something up.

Questions:
is the trans oil sender telling me high heat, low presure, or oil level?
the trans was not fully heated up when I added the two quarts, would two quarts ove make the V730 run hot?
maybe my heat exchanger is clogged up and causing the trans to heat up and the light come on?

It all turned out to be a simple fix:
A copper pipe carrying coolant to the transmission heat exchanger was poorly installed and rubbed a hole in where I could not see it. I have Never lost or consumed any coolant, oil, or trans fluid in the 4000 miles I put on her in the last two months of ownership; I did not bother to check the coolant for a 30-mile run.
The trans light came on because the manual transmission sender was attached to the engine block when the Allison was installed, and the dashboard was never relabeled to say “engine coolant heat”. It appears it went off at about 185 or 190 degrees.

I repaired my pinhole coolant leak, topped off the coolant, and ran her hard for an hour…. No more light or high temp situation….

Thanks for all who replied by email with your encouragement and tips. I was quite surprised than there were no replies posted to the board!
