The 370 in the skoolie runs! I got it going, so it looks like I won't need to pay $200+ for a semi wrecker. I replaced the flat tire, & everything seems to work well--brakes are good (though the e-brake cable is broken), wipers work, steering is tight (about 1-2" of play, with a 28" wheel), suspension is tight, & trans & rear end shift perfectly. HOLY COW, these old nylon-bias tires are bouncy, though. |

Let's hope it is an indication of the ol'Gals desire to run wild and free again! Talking Schoolies here can get you into some weird water with some people, but I am sure we all agree that the important thing is USING YOUR BUS and enjoying it! Schoolies may not lend themselves to the optimal RV usage, but like Corvairs, everyone who has had one has fond memories of them. My Dads 1st bus was a 48 pass. Studebaker he painted it baby blue w/ white stripes and we put 25,000 miles on it in 2 yrs AND he made money when he sold it! It also had a 2sp. rear end which was dam handy in the Blue Ridge, Pocono's, Catskills and Black Hills! If we could have tons of fun in one (30 yrs. ago), you can too, give'er hell and you might make it on the road before Labor Day w/e! Keep us all advised, and keep it simple, don't work yourself to death on your 1st one. BTW when you start solving your construction problems in your sleep instead of staying awake, you are at level 3 |

John I agree with the above message. I'm not an official nut yet and personally plan to use a intercity when the time comes. But a friend of mine had a great skoolie that we abused for years. It went from Tahoe to the ocean to the east coast, football tailgaters, fishing hunting and the rest. He had the bus because the sticks and staples motor home he had previously (ala Fred's description) fell apart. It wasn't a matter of money, it was simply the skoolie fit the bill for the type of camping he did here in the west. One thing I noted Fast Fred said to an earlier post, we we're turned down at several RV parks and kicked out of more than one parking lot. Might have been the sign on the back door that read "Don't laugh, your daughter's in here..." |

Something going on in St Petersburg, Florida area: Figure 8 School bus racing. They get a school bus, take all the glass out, put in proper racing saftey belt and race. If they wreck one they go buy another. They cross each others path at the center of the figure 8. |

Every seen a skoolie jump over a pile of cars? That is pretty interesting too. Strong ol' buggers. Scott |

Gorsh, ummmmm....why do they have to be called "slookies" in the first place.... seems kind of demeaning...why don't we just call them real buses and call all those plush things 'coachies" or something!!! I love my Crown. I can cut holes and windows into it anywhere and not worry about it breaking in two pieces; it's super easy to weld things to; the windshields are a whopping $125 when I break them; it hauls butt up hills; gets 10MPG and takes me everywhere; It's mid engine gives me 35 foot of interior space for a 35 foot bus as opposed to having to get a 6' longer vehicle for the same interior length...it doesn't have air bags to pop, it's strong as an ox (Ohmygosh, it's a class 8 truck with a bus body!) it looks good and it hates being called a "skoolie"!! To me a bus is a bus... Hee hee! jes' pokin ya'll a bit!! Gary |

I believe the term was best when used on a T shirt "Support your local Skools " FAST FRED |

I never thought of the term "skoolie" as a demeaning term before, just an affectionate term to more clearly identify them. |

>when you start solving >your construction problems >in your sleep instead of staying awake, >you are at level 3 So, what level are you at when you actually wake up and find yourself working on the bus. Dreaming is one thing, but when you wake up with an air compressor in your hands....... Ross |
