I HAVE A NEW POWER ASSIT UNIT WITH PUMP.
AM I WASTING MY TIME INSTALLING IT ??
I CAN'T AFFORD ANY THING ELSE AT THIS TIME.
AM I SETTING MYSELF UP FOR HEADACHES?

I assume you have a hydraulic assist rather than the more rare air assist. The hydraulic assist has a little more play than the integral Sheppard steering box but it sure is an improvement over the armstrong version. With carefull adjustment of the ball valve and removal of all backlash in the steering column mechanism, it is quite liveable. Up until the 70's it was the best available.

If you ever do go to the Sheppard box, remember the '04 steering is backward from the later GM's. The '04 takes a different box unless you change the steering column miter gear box. I have heard of some folks changing both column and steering box with an RTS but I have no personal experience with that. FWIW
