I have finally located a source of Rockwool sound board for my generator compartment. I will post details of where to get it shortly.

My original sound insulation was foam over lead. The foam finally disintegrated from generator engine heat. I don't like foam in high temp locations. 25 years ago the local fire chief told me about rockwool as a more fireresistant insulation. 15 minutes to burn through for 31/2 inche fiberglass insullated drywall covered firewall vs no burn through in an hour for rockwool. And rockwool has a slightly higher R factor with similar costs.

I have been trying to find a source of rockwool board that would sell me about 80 sq ft. I finally found one. It is available as a rockwool board 1 1/2, 2, or 3 inches thick. It can take about 1800 degrees. It is a good sound insulator and should also reduce heat transfer from the generator compartment to the interior of the coach. Does not retain water or mildew. I also plan to put at the top of the engine compartment to reduce heat transfer to the bedroom after a road trip. It should also act as a fire wall there to keep an engine fire out of the interior of the coach for a much longer time.

I also will be adding additional rockwool insulation to my homes attic, which should keep a fire out of the attic longer and give it less draft giving more escape time and perhaps less damage in case of a fire.

Rockwool is harder to buy because it is not marketed in all the building supply stores. You have to go to a big city commercial distributor. Finding a good source was difficult enough that I am going to post details later after I have bought my materials, done the installation and can give real experience. I got almost no help from the Indiana company that makes rockwool. It is mostly a commercial and industrial product as far as they are concerned. So I want to give all the information for a smooth transaction when I post details.

I will really be glad to get this job finally done.

Thanx for that, Stephen. Considering changing mine as well. No problems. Just think there might be a better way.

Rockwool is hard to beat even in house insulation. Older than the hills but very effective.

FWIW... and looking forward to the "rest of the story".....:-)

We put in 1 1/2" rockwool board glued to the compartment walls with very thin sprayed contact adhesive then coverd with 1/2" hardware cloth and fastened at about 16" intervals with 2" #6 screws with 1/4" hex heads and fender washers over the hardware cloth. The hardware cloth is too flexible to transmit sound or vibration. It serves to keep the rockwool in its place. The sound deadening is amazing and it will not burn.

All I can hear inside is the air conditioning blower, not he generator. I will insulate over the engine after my upcoming trip.

Extra rockwool board can be used to make a lightweight welding shield that is totally spark proof. I plan to make a permanent three sided one with plywood hinges and rockwool. It will be a good wind brake too.

My source was:
