Dear BusNut
Where do I start? It's been a heck of a week for me but a Hell of a week for my Dad! As you know I posted that he was in ICU earlier in the week. Well he still is, but the good news is, he is better and has been progressing upward each day since his major surgery. He couldn't have come this far so quickly without the many phone calls, emails, text messages, and board post with prayers and thoughts from you guys and gals. You ARE the best without a doubt! You guys ARE second to none in my book!
I know my Dad won't be with me forever and I think this past week has brought me to believe that when the day does arrive that he is ready to go, I will accept it just a little easier. I knew from the start that he wasn't ready. He told me that they, the doctors, needed to do whatever they needed to do to correct what was bothering him. The doctors heard his words and proceeded with the surgery. They told me that it might be the last time I saw my dad alive and the last time we would talk but at the same time, without any surgery, he wouldn't have made it thru the night so what did we have to lose. We rolled the dice so to speak and 2 hours later, the doctors said he had come thru the surgery very well. It wasn't his colon like they expected but they DID find a rupture in his intestine. A blow out of sorts. The good thing, if there is one, is that the rupture was up high versus down low. Less infection! Now back to the unit and wait! Waiting and watching each day as his BP went down, then up, along with his breathing and body temp. which got to 102.4 at one time. By Tuesday, he was squeezing my hand when I talked and kind of just stared at the ceiling as if he was star gazing. Each shift change would bring a different opinion from a different nurse. Last night Susan and I thought he would not be here today. No response from our voice and no movement at all but all his vital signs were good. I told the nurse he was just tired. The nurse said she thought he took a turn for the worse. I told her, just like I told the doctors that they didn't know MY DAD! He's not a quitter. If he was, he wouldn't have made it this far! By the way, My Dad had a birthday on Monday, St Patricks Day, while laying in ICU and he turned 87 and to him that's just a number on paper and he doesn't think he is that old in his mind. All they could say was we hope your right! Well today, I went there to see him and he was wide awake. What I noticed differently today over last evening was he was looking right at me just as if nothing was done! The doctor there told me he was stable and recovering remarkably well! Tonight they took him off the resperator because he was breathing so well that it was sounding off the alarm. Tube was removed from his throat and tonight we talked. First time in 7 days! Temperature is normal, BP is normal, heart rate is normal, oxygen level is normal and his surgical wounds are healing nicely. The BEST thing is he was smiling!
I know he has a long long road to recover fully but we have all the time in the world! Besides BusNuts really don't care how long the roads are as long as there is happiness when they get there!
Once again, Susan and I want to express our deepest thanks to each and every one of you for the prayers and kind words that were posted and sent! Without you all, it would have made this week very lonely with a somewhat empty feeling but knowing each time I logged on here and read a new post from those people I know and those I don't, really made me feel like you ALL were right there with me in the waiting room!
I@n one thing I forgot to put in my original post"My Dad" was that it was Off Topic. I appoligize and am so grateful that it was not deleted!
Thank you all...
Ace, Susan and MY Dad!

Ace: I believe that your comments have said that your dad was a christian and all is well. I prayed that God would answer all the prayers and I think that He has so we will continue that and especially for you and the family for guidence, understanding and most of all comfort in this time.

Hi Ace,
We are sooo glad that things have turned out so well. When I read your first post, I didn't reply 'cause I couldn't find the right words. I guess I was expecting the worst given your dad's age & all. But we said a prayer, like others did. Interestingly my wife (a nurse) was way more hopeful than me. So this morning I am reminded once again that faith triumphs over calculating the odds. We are so blessed to live in a country that does not make medical decisions by the odds!
WOO HOO to you & Susan & Happy Birthday to Dad!

So good to hear Ace. Always remember that the one your asking to fix things is the one who built them in the first place! Kinda like taking a bus back to the factory for repair. If things aren't answered to our satisfaction, it's because our timing is off, not God's. May the Lord bless you and your dad during the recovery process.

Sitting in the waiting room! A DIFFERENT one! He JUST got moved from ICU the 7th floor. The surgeons own floor! He's getting better every day it seems and today he was even out of bed and sitting in a chair for a couple of hours! Kind of tired because he is mixed up between days and nights! That will soon correct itself I'm sure!
Yes prayers so work and thank everyone again for the help! I plan on spending as much time with my dad as I can. I think that was one of the messages I learned from all of this! :-)
