I am finally in the back bedroom and getting ready to insulate the back wall up against the engine. I found a foil insulation that the maximum temperature that the product is designed to withstand is 180 degrees F. That back wall wouldn't get that hot would it???? Anyway found it at lowes and thought I would ask around before I decided to use it. Thanks
Jim
Also with it being spring...if anyone is traveling thru Pittsburgh drop me a note. I would like to see some other busses before I get mine finished (just to ensure I didn't forget anything)

Aren't you going to be very close to exhaust manifold and mufflers? Original heat blanket was much higher rating. You don't want a fire back there. Hard to get to to put out. I wouldn't use a 180 degree rated plastic there. Might be fine on the inside walls. Your money, your choice.

The PO of mine used what looks like the regular pink stuff with a foil backing instead of paper. I don't think that area gets all that hot from what I have experienced. There is a heat shield above the exaust manifold attached to the access panel. Make sure it is still there.

Sorry, I was thinking the engine side of the firewall. If the original heat blanket is there and in good shape, most any good, waterproof home insulation will work. My bus was hot spray foamed and that has held up well.

After driving all day on a hot day, the rear walls can get very warm. Most beds are located there and the temp can be too high for sleeping. Get a good R factor there if you can. Watch carefully for ratings on the sheet plastic products. They will give an R rating based on 1" thickness but the product is only 1/4" thick. Some claim a very high rating but the fine print says it includes a major air space on both sides to get the high rating. Some of this is in very small print. R 7 for an inch thickness is about all that is affordable. If the claim is higher, check carefully. HTH

The muffler on a 4106 is near the rear of the engine compartment and not near the back wall. It also gets air from the radiator between it and the back wall. Larry 4106

My 4104 is much modified. (350hp 6V92TA, V730 etc) It does not have a blanket as the exhaust and muffler are now in the right rear corner. What I was remembering, I guess, was installing a new blanket in my son's RTS. That was a major project with the engine in. It's easy to "assume" that because a feature was in one bus, it was also in another.

A blanket would not be a bad idea in any conversion, however. There is a lot of heat generated back there. That's that 60% + of fuel energy that is not used to move you down the road.

BTW did anyone see that film clip showing sea water burning since strong radio waves were separating the hydrogen and oxygen in the small sample? What they didn't say was how much energy was needed to free the small amount of gas. Past methods have taken more energy to free the hydrogen than could be regained from burning it.

mineral wool would be a good option good for heat sound and high temp

Another consideration would be the board that they currently use to make the ac/ heat ducts in houses. Then put a layer of the bubble wrap on top of it.
