Has anyone added a 12V alternator to a 4905(or similar GMC)? I'd like to look at adding a single wire 200 Amp alternator for the house side. I know this is redundent to the 24 V alternator and could open a huge debate on the board but I'm just looking at options for powering up the house side. |

Yes, I've seen it, but haven't done it myself.
Driven by the old PTO for the OEM A/C.
(BTW, Flxible used this idea on their "New Look" transits.)

I was planning on using the PTO to drive it now that the OEM AC is a goner. Does anyone have an idea as to what RPM the PTO is at ? I know I should look it up but I'm being lazy. |

I added TWO alternators on my 4905, one 12v one wire running off the old angle drive to the AC, the other is a 24v one wire delco off the cam pulley. Works great, I use the 12v to run a single 12v deep cycle battery for all the 12v stuff, the 24v automotive type regulated for the engine batts, and the original oil cooled biggie thru a three stage regulator for the house bank. I feel good, one little jumper, and I have an easy road fix if any one of them goes down. |

Don, How did you run the 12V off the angle drive ? Did you use a pulley or direct drive off the shaft ? |

Well, mine was easy, it had a grooved pulley already there. I just ran the v belt on the alternator and the v grooves work very well on the iside surface of the belt. Sure is a trouble free system, can be replaced at any auto parts store on the road.
I think the transits used an alternator there for the AC somehow, my angle drive must have been off one of these, it had not only the pulley, but a mounting block for the brackets as well. |
