I am about ready to install a Coleman basement unit and have a question about the intake vents for the compressor. I would like to vent this from underneath the bus through the floor as opposed to making a vent in the door. The exhaust vent is already designed to go through the floor, and my concern is if the air underneath the bus is hotter than on the side?? Is this a bad idea and if so, why? If I need to place this vent in the door, how do I construct the vent, expanded metal, or louvers?? Where to get louvers??? Thanks, Tom Hamrick Eagle 10S |

Tom, Another consideration in trying to install intake under the bus is the overall size needed. I removed the rub rail from the door on our MC-8 and cut out this entire area, replacing with expanded aluminum mesh. This just barely met the minumum requirement for intake square inches. If you do not have adequate intake of cool air this will reduce the effeciency of the unit. You can see some photos of our installation at http://members2.clubphoto.com/jack217421 We have been using ours recently in FL, with bus sitting with no shade. We set thermostat at 78 and AC does not run continuously. A couple of factors that I think help the effeciency of our system is spray-foam and addition 3" in ceiling on either side of AC duct as well as 90% of outside of bus is painted ultra white. Hope this helps, Jack |

Thanks Jack, I guess I had better stick with the whole in the door. Tom Hamrick Eagle 10S |

I've seen Jack's installation and he did a tremendous job, so his advice is well founded. I put mine where the heat/AC/batteries were located, GM 4905) and went down thru the floor for intake/exhaust, with the tempered air going straight up thru a fabricated manifold into the original ducting and return air. BTW, mine is the heat pump version, which many members of the 'Board recommended that I NOT buy, but I'm really quite pleased with it and it is very quiet. Cheers...JJ |

Tom, the only caveat to the bottom intake is that filters clog up much faster. Mine are 18X18 and readily available in the East, but when I was in the Southwest recently, I ended up manufacturing some because they weren't available locally. C...JJ |

JJ, So the whole in the floor works good for you? Is the 18x18 a solid whole or a series of smaller holes? Thanks for the reply. Tom Hamrick Eagle 10S |
