Hello.

Article from Mass Transit e-mail news:

http://www.masstransitmag.com/publication/article.jsp?siteSection=1&id=6141

This has some negative effects on some highway funding formulas, as they are derived from these statistics and fuel taxes.

I have to say that since leaving May 6th I have not encountered much traffic - A lot of J.B.Hunt and Schneider trailers were riding the rails. Makes traveling easy though.

Thanks for the post. I was wondering how the holiday traffic was this year i still havent heard or read anything yet. We live on LI New york and it is always tough getting on and off this rock with the traffic let alone the bridge tolls.

Yeah. Recreate...procreate. About the same with a date.
That's why people install 'Big-Feets' on their bus. Proper stabilization is important when recreating.

Those taxes are based on per dollar not per gallon. So if the traveled is down only 4% but the price of fuel has more than doubled in the last 12 or 16 months seems to me that the bureaucrats should still have a windfall and have nothing to complain about in tax revenue. They project revenue increases at a bogus formula and when it does not meet that they say they are short and cry and screw us some more.

Same old analogy applies here.

Jack the price too much and watch revenue decline.

Good for them, the vendors and bureaucrats both.

Up here in Illinois they don't repair the roads till they are so deplorable that they have to so the way I see it it can't get much worse in those terms anyway.

We used to make many frequent trips for this and that. Now we go out ONCE a week and do them all in 1 loop. I think we have actually dropped our fuel costs from last year.

We used to spend around 50 cents a mile for fuel with the bus. Now that is doubled but we are changing our habits and only traveling 1/5th what we used to. And finding we are still enjoying ourselves tremendously. Heck look at all the other costs of travel besides fuel that we are saving as well.

I KNOW we are not alone.

Don't most states tax a fixed amount per gallon? In this case less driving means less money to fix roads. I know Minnesota charges per gallon.

Some states do have a sales tax on gasoline also so they will make a bit more on the sales tax only.

North Carolina has an .18 per gallon state gasoline tax and some sort of .075 sliding scale charge. No sales tax per se. This is a total of .48 cents per gallon for gasoline. Diesel has .54 per gallon combined state and fed.
North Carolina charges .12 more per gallon than South Carolina, so a right good bit of revenue is lost to the other side of the border in southern NC.
California tax collectors are complaining about the loss of highway tax revenues. They are in a twit over the lost revenue. Hey, who says American drivers cannot change their driving habits. Now the state will penalize them for such frugality!
Changing driving habits are choking off the lifeblood revenue streams of the automotive, trucking, RV, marine, auto parts...ad infinitum.
Who's next?
Since North Carolina quit spending money on roads some years ago, we can't tell any difference. NC roads suck. Still a decent place to live.
I'm going down AM tomorrow and drop $500 bucks into the bus fuel tank. Watch prices come down after I fill up!
We're headed out for a few days. Not really excited about this trip...gonna be in the upper 90s for the next week and we're camping with NO power poles. Gads. Reckon the generator will get a workout...my wallet will get a workout too!
JR
