James, I don't know anything about orions, but if it suits what you want in a bus, go for it. Detroit has built engines for many years and should be reliable enough. IF it was designed for sale as a commuter bus, it should have a reasonably long life expectency. I would always check the undercarraige and frame for rust issues. That can be a real killer. Good luck! |

Any -53 series is going to be a screamer. Instead of 2100 RPM's think in terms of 2650 RPM's. |

James, you might want to double-check, and look for a builder's plate somewhere. From that angle, it looks a lot more like a Twin Coach TC-25 than an Orion. I've run both, and the Orion's corners are more rounded. Also, it looks short enough (again, indicative of a TC-25), which would be consistent with only a 4 cylinder engine. Some properties had problems with the 6-53 (six cylinders, 53 cubic inches per cylinder). When I was on a property that had some Twins (late 1970's), I don't remember any issues, but we only used them in light service - and converted two to lift-equipped demand response vehicles. Has anyone had any expieriance with 453 engines, i have driven lots of diesel engines before including 8v71 ,and 8V92 in big trucks and bus, but never the 453, i know it is a small engine not big horse power or torque , but i dont need to go fast up hills anymore, any imput would be great, i would imagine they might be good on fuel. Mark is correct, this is one of the noisiest engines known to mankind. It was used in military vehicles, water pumps, generators and Ford installed it in some pickups for a few years, around '56-'58 I think. |

It has been that way since Ian installed the new board several months ago. It will at least let you edit the post, which I do if something is wrong with my post. Richard |

James - Look very, very carefully around the wheelwells, both inside and outside the coach. For awhile the charter outfit I worked for shared a yard (while their local terminal was being built) with a rebuilder who refurbished a bunch of these little TCs. Nearly every one had really soft flooring from water getting to the floor from underneath, some of which extended clear across the coach. Rust was also found it the tube framing, especially around the windows - again where water had leaked inside. Pretty gutless, too. . . Top speed on this batch was all of 50 mph - perfect for light-duty transit work in suburban areas, not so good as a highway hauler. Your $$. . .your choice. . . FWIW & HTH. .

Thanks RJ, I will check it out and i am sure they are gutless, this was a comuter coach and ran on the HWY, so i would imagine it must be geared for the HWY i hope, the bus is in seattle i am about 3 hours away in Canada, it is a estate sale,so there is not much known about it. Cheers James |

James - Time to throw a monkey wrench into all of this: Transport Canada may not allow you to import this coach! If they were never approved for sale, or imported into Canada while they were in production, chances are slim to none that you'll be able to bring it across the border on a permanent basis, especially since it apparently no longer has a seated coach interior. Better do some more homework before you take any plunge on this vehicle. Surrey, BC, eh? My daughter went to Trinity Western in Langley, now lives in Kelowna. FWIW & HTH. . .

James Orion approved for import are restricted to 1995 and newer models, all others are on the inadmissable list. I was at Ritchie Bross Auction this aft to check what stuff went for two weeks ago while I was on the other side of the big pond. Three MCI classic 1992 transits with newer 6/92 went for 1750 and 2000 dollars. Relativly cheap. Keep looking!!! The right one is out there. Joe. |

James I received an email from a lurker out of New Brunswick and he mentioned that Orion 1's to 5's are permisable for importation. The reason is they were built by Ontario bus Industrius (bus industries of america) There may have been a corporate reorganization so they show up on the RIV list under two different listings. Other forum members may know more about this. Joe. |
