Well we pumped up the fuel in the head,no leaks. So our head gasket change out was a sucsess. Now its time to start her up.I hear a noise like loose bolts ratteling, look in that direction of the fly wheel and it seems to be wobbeling when it turns.I know I have a problem,so I begin dissconecting everthing and pull the transmission. The clutch looks good so does the pressure plate.I see 4 bolts sheared and two still holding the flywheel to the crankshaft.I check the bearing and shaft coming out of the transmission the bearing 0n the end of the shaft feels bumpy not smoth.I am assuming this bearing has created my problem and vibrated, finally shearing the flywheel to crancshaft bolts.Tommorow I will be pulling the bad bearing and tying to get the dowl pins and bolt shafts loose and out of the crank. does anyone have any input.Do you agree?Has this happend to anyone else???? There are others who are better equipped to answer this than me, however, this is what I understand: The dowel pins are super critical to the flywheel mounting. Flywheel bolts on other Detroits are one-time use only. Be really careful putting this back together. It could get really expensive if you aren't. Jim |

john you might want to replace the vibration damper on the front of the motor as on a 6/71 when they start to go out of whack they can bust the fly wheel bolts and as the engine runs they bust the crank shaft. it sounds like who ever ran this motor last shut it of in time so i would check this before i started it again. also check the main bearing and make sure that it has not streched the bolts as it can rip the cap right off.this is the end one next to the tranny. mel4104 |

Jim Mel I pulled the flywheel/backed out the 4 broken bolts. The cluch looks good/the pilot bearing in the fly wheel looks good/but there are NO dowel pins coming out of the crankshaft??Mel how can you tell if the vibration damper is bad??Also on one engine mount I found a screw missing??Could this also be one of the potential causes ? I tend to feel that I need to a)get all new studs b)mount the flywheel back in position c)line up the flywheel and dial indicate it in the exact center.d)drill to dowel pin holes opposite each other and pin them. |

jim by look of you should pull the engine so you can work on it as it will give you a chance to check and repair what needs to be fixed. in the long run it is generaly faster and a better way to do what needs to be done than fighting tight spots and cramped places. with the block out you can take it to shop that can check vibration damper, drillout the studs check your bearing caps, and a proper engine clean up , it is then a good time to paint it up nice and green again,it give you a great feeling when you put it back in and the grand old lady looks young again. as to how to check the damper it takes a very good shop man to do it wright. as it is very costly to miss some thing which is easy to do. let us know how you make out. mel4104 |

I appriciate everyones help/I took the bolts to the DDA dealer. They said the newer crank shafts did not use dowel pins.So I guess mine was correct. However they did ask the following questions: 1) did you use new bolts when you had it apart two years ago.NO. DDA says always use new bolts. 2) did you use intaenational # 2 compound on the bolts.NO. DDA always recomends.to use it. 3) did you touque the bolts down to 50lbs then 120 degrees around.NO.this is the new DDA method of toquing the flywheel. Since the last time I had it apart I have had a jumping while taking off or backing. So i took the clutch back they said it was good. But I checked the 1.3/8"clearance for the fingers. It was wrong. So I adjusted it .I also found a bolt loose on one of the motor mounts.Took it out last night NO JUMPING.iT TAKES OFF AND REVERSES SO SMOOTH. Tami and I pulled the tranny on saterday 3hrs One friend and I put the fly@clutch back mon 3.5hrs Another friend and put the tranny back and hooked everything up tues 4hrs i also put a new throw out and flywheel bearings in.Now im running synthetic (which i love/thanks fred) I replaced the gear box seal and gaskets. Wed test drove. Thanks again John and Tami |
