Whatever the reason, you have a good shell that needs a good interior. Wouldn't it be nice to get one for pennies, free, or even be PAID to TAKE it? Here's how!

Go back to the classifieds. Look at the Tinkertoy motorhome listings, paying extra attention to the ones mentioning "needs engine work," "transmission trouble," "cracked windshield" etc. These will be the ones with the lowest asking prices.

Go check these out. They usually belong to someone who just wants to unload something they don't use anymore. But it still has an INTERIOR, doesn't it? Do the appliances work? The water pump? Are the cabinets and counter in good shape?

Now you see where I'm going with this. You can buy a couple of thousand dollars' worth of interior, on the hoof, and tow the thing away to take all of the parts out. Other parts which might be of use are the aircons on the roof, genset, awnings, LP tanks, windows, water tanks, level gauges, battery, inverter, leveling system, etc. You bought the thing, so take off anything that might be of value to you!

A lot of the older motorhomes are available dirt cheap, thanks to campground restrictions, high gas prices and the cost of paying someone to fix them.

I recently bought a 1985 34-footer for $500. The fridge is bad, but it's got a bunch of extras which will fit nicely into my Buffalo. I figure that what I've saved on the big-propane-powered genset alone will pay for the motorhome and my Buffalo! The extra several thousand bucks worth of stuff more than make up for having to buy a new fridge (and the old one was small, anyhow)!

Okay, so then what? Now you have a big box on wheels. That box still has an engine, steering, transmission, axles and chassis.

This is when you call the local wrecking yards. Someone will be willing to drag away the hulk if they can part it out the rest of the way. You might even get a few bucks from them.

Or, even better, you put the thing back in the classifieds, selling it for spare parts! You might even make all of your original money back, especially if it's got The Big Engine or other desirable parts.

Don't forget to check out travel trailers, either. These are likewise a glut on the market, and nice ones in the 24 - 28 foot range can be found for under $1000. And what do you have after taking the innards out? You have a big box on wheels, with a trailer hitch and the ability to carry a ton or more. Have you priced big utility box trailers lately? You can sell it, maybe at a profit, or you can keep it. Imagine cutting the rear cap off, replacing it with an aluminum ramp, and using it as a car hauler, towed behind the coach you've moved the innards to.

So, you see, even though bus conversions are far and away superior, mere motorhomes still have some value!

. . .oh, yeah, you know those parks which only allow "professionally-built motorhomes" . . ? That little oval plate from the RV builder comes right off the Tinkertoy and right onto your coach! If that's not enough, let the nosy gal from the park look inside, and she will see a "professional-built" interior!

I heard that the Airstream cabinets fit the contour of an MCI nearly perfectly!

(btw, check the insurance company listings for wrecked RVs for sale)(your local rv shop can get the specs)

When I parted out my 73 Winnie, I removed all of the appliances, but the avacado paisley countertops weren't going in the orange bus! Be aware though - trailers and motorhomes that are made of fiberglass or foam laminated walls may not be accepted by scrap yards because they have to pay someone to dissasemble/seperate the metals from the other stuff. That is what happened to me.

John,
I gotta ask "where did you find the program to insert that bug?" I almost scratched a hole in my monitor trying to get the pesky little critter. Can "bugs" be inserted in emails also. I want that! Jack

Jack -

Assuming you're using "Windows", just "right-click" on the pesky critter,
and pick "save picture as"... Save it as a "gif" to any location you want.

You can also "copy and paste" the image to a new Email, with
most Email programs!

You can use Norton, AVG, McAfee, or any other good virus remover
to get rid of them later......

Sorry for the delay in responding!!

I can't for the life of me remember where I got those things.
I have a directory with various gifs that I've saved through
the years... for whatever purpose I thought was important
at the time? I dunno... I'm old.. the memory is gonzo, but
the gifs remain. I was surprised when I found them.

Just googling for ".gif" (with the quotes) and adding bug,
insect, animated, or whatever...outside of, and with no quotes,
can produce some real dandies!
