What type of oil or grease goes in the radiator gear box for a 1984 Prevost. The manual says to use the same oil as in the engine but the oil in the box smells like rear end grease.

Clean the grease out of the gear box. It was probably put in there instead of replacing the leaky seals. It needs plain 40 wt. oil.

Having the grease in there will eventually destroy the gearbox.

I just helped someone replace one this week in a Le Mirage XL which failed over time cause someone had put grease in the box. It will run hotter than it is supposed to and will eventually destroy the gears.

Prevost recommends the use of a synthetic gear and bearing oil for current Superior gearboxes. It would certainly help the older Boston gearboxes as well. Mobil 1 SHC 630 is what they provide. Not cheap at $17/qt but neither is the gearbox at $485. If the Boston gearbox is tired, don't rebuild it. Replace with the Superior box. Rebuild cost is about $350 and it will fail again.

On a leaking tractor mower gearbox I was told that the problem with grease is that a pocket of air, no grease, forms around the bearings permanently. Grease will not flow back into the void. It was OK to use heavier gear oil, since it will flow into the void. not suggesting you cut corners on replacing seals on parts on the bus. A bad gearbox will strand the bus and perhaps allow the fan to ruin the radiator. With the tractor, I just drive back to the barn and fix it.
